Hagel to discuss Iraq strategy at town hall meeting
BY JAKE THOMPSON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Hagel, who has angered some Nebraska Republicans with his criticism of President Bush's Iraq strategy, plans a town hall meeting in Lincoln next month to discuss the Iraq war and national security.

Hagel has scheduled the event for noon to 1:30 p.m. on July 3rd in the Kimball Recital Hall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Republican senator said Thursday that he plans to talk for about 10 minutes on national security challenges and the war, "then just open it up."

"I think that's part of our responsibility, especially on the tough issues that elicit great emotion and passion and feeling, and there's not a more important issue than war," Hagel said.

I have been waiting for a plan but all I hear is rhetoric. Oh and put a new guy in charge, and then blame him for everything.

2. I'm not far from Lincoln. I should go. But it might get a little dangerous
with all the pitchforks and torches.

3. Are you sure there will be pitchforks?
If you decide to dare the danger and go, will you post about it? Please do.

4. I don't know. I wonder if a lot of angry Nebraska Republicans
will show up and confront/heckle him--or will it be sedate and respectful? I give him credit for "opening it up" instead of just making a speech and leaving, at least. If I go (I may be working that day), I will report on it.

5. Some pitchforks, I guess, but
I remember reading that over 50% of Nebraskan republicans (I think it was republicans, not the general population) are against the war. If that's indeed the case, there should be some support as well. Hagel has his major faults, but he is gutsy and smart, both things I respect.
