NATO: 60 insurgents killed near Pakistan

By JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer
48 minutes ago

FORWARD OPERATING BASE THUNDER, Afghanistan - NATO and
U.S.-led coalition forces killed 60 insurgents near the border with
Pakistan, in what was described as the largest insurgent formation
crossing the region in six months, the military said Saturday.

Pakistan's army said a rocket fired during the battle hit a house on
its side of the border, killing nine civilians. It denied any insurgents
had crossed the frontier.

Extra troops have been deployed on both sides of the mountainous
frontier in an attempt to prevent militants who find sanctuary in
Pakistan's wild tribal regions from mounting crossborder raids and
sustaining the five-year-old war.

NATO said militants attacked Afghan and alliance troops late Friday
in the Bermel district of Paktika province. NATO and U.S.-led forces
returned fire, killing about 60 fighters, an alliance statement said.

Karzai blasts NATO for civilian deaths

By RAHIM FAIEZ, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday
accused NATO and U.S.-led forces of carelessly killing civilians in
recent operations, and suggested the international community
considered Afghan lives to be "cheap."

Such operations "will have no benefit for Afghanistan," Karzai said
at a news conference.

Police said Friday that a NATO airstrike had killed 25 civilians as
well as 20 militants who had fired on NATO and Afghan troops from
a walled compound in the southern province of Helmand.

NATO said the insurgents caused innocent victims by hiding among
civilians, and defended the right of its troops to defend themselves.

However, Karzai said that incident was an example of NATO troops
using disproportionate force and exposed a "serious lack of
coordination with the Afghan government."

5.  U.S., NATO see surge in Afghan deaths (230 civilian deaths so far this year)
U.S., NATO see surge in Afghan deaths By ALISA TANG, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - U.S.-led coalition and NATO forces fighting insurgents in Afghanistan have killed at least 203 civilians so far this year — surpassing the 178 civilians killed in militant attacks, according to an Associated Press tally.

Insurgency attacks and military operations have surged in recent weeks, and in the past 10 days, more than 90 civilians have been killed by airstrikes and artillery fire targeting Taliban insurgents, said President Hamid Karzai.

On Sunday, another civilian may have been killed when British troops opened fire in a populated area after their convoy was hit by a roadside bomb, officials and witnesses said.

Separate figures from the U.N. and an umbrella organization of Afghan and international aid groups show that the numbers of civilians killed by international forces is approximately equal to those killed by insurgents
