Former Rep. Bob Livingston Urges Vitter to Stay Strong
Sunday, July 15, 2007

NEW ORLEANS — Robert Livingston, the former Louisiana congressman who resigned in the late 1990s after admitting to extramarital affairs, said his situation is not at all like U.S. Sen. David Vitter's, and he urged Vitter not to resign.

Monday, Vitter, R-La., acknowledged a past "serious sin" involving an escort service that federal prosecutors claim was a prostitution ring. Since then, he has stayed out of the public eye, as several Republicans, including prominent members of the state GOP, have offered support and critics have accused the family values politician of hypocrisy.

Livingston, in an interview with WWL TV, said he had urged the fellow Republican "to pick himself up and charge forward. We need him
(snip)

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said he had exchanged e-mails with Vitter and expected him in Washington, D.C., by Tuesday. Vitter missed votes Tuesday through Friday, and his whereabouts over the last week have been the source of much speculation.

Political analyst Elliott Stonecipher said it's unusual for a senator to be out of sight so long and "does not look good."

19. What a pantsload!
Vitter: I apologize for having my number turn up on the DC Madam's list.

Question: Was that number a 1 or a 2?

5. Well isn't this the kiss of death.
Nothing like a blast from the past, who got destroyed over his playdates with hookers to tell you to fight. Ha.

9. The diaper will bury him.
If it was just a hooker problem then maybe he could shake this off, but how does he come back to the Senate when everyone knows he was wearing diapers when he was visiting his hookers? You know everyone one of his "distinguished colleagues",
his "good friend from (fill in the state)" is going to be thinking of him wearing a big white diaper every time they see him.
Oh, the humiliation...

10. Every poll I've seen is in favor of Vitter leaving..
Even Republicans are not not completely behind Vitter despite any spin you might read. And that's not surprising considering that this scandal makes it that much harder for Louisiana to get recovery funds and assistance. None of this would have happened if Vitter hadn't broken the law and stayed faithful to begin with.

Getting forgiveness from God doesn't absolve you from being a criminal.

13. It's the ridicule factor
I think voters will forgive a criminal act before they will forgive something that makes a person look disgusting/ridiculous. And having a prostitute change his soiled diaper is disgusting to think about.

12. Yes, and perhaps Mrs. Vitter & Mrs. Bob Livingston and their
hubbies, along with the DeMint family, can get together some evening for a good game of "Fish" & good hot herbal tea.... and for a little serious talk of morality, Henry Hyde will be invited to cheer up the devastated Vitter family.

21. et tu, bob! (i'm loving this tactful graceful back stab)
of course if livingston really wanted vitter to stay strong, he'd stfu, who'd want an endorsement from bondage bob this time of century?

i knew vitter was disliked on the left, but i'm loving how those supposedly on his side are coming out with sweet little "butter wouldn't melt" comments of "support" that are worse than saying nothing at all

22. It was typical Republican brotherly love, wasn't it? He pointed out he, himself,
had held a "leadership" position, UNLIKE VITTER!

Rep. Bob Livingston, in his
"leadership" glory, before
Flynt caught up with him.

23. I predict Vitter will be gone by September.
Prostitutes alone have caused many members of Congress to resign.

But diapers?
