Davis Gets Stay of Execution for 90 Days
Source: Atlanta Progressive News

By Matthew Cardinale, News Editor, The Atlanta Progressive News (July 16, 2007)

(APN) SAVANNAH -- Troy Anthony Davis has received a 90 day stay of execution, Atlanta Progressive News has learned.

The meeting of Davis's lawyers and supporters with the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles lasted until 3:15pm today, thus lasting about six hours, Laura Moye, Deputy Director of Amnesty International Southern Regional Office, said. After this, the Board met with state prosecutors.

US Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) was among those who spoke in support of Davis at the hearing today. US Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) also offered to speak in support of Davis, spokesperson Deb Speights told APN.

The Atlanta Progressive News is great and deserves our support, BTW.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricky_Ray_Rector

"Bill Clinton returned to Arkansas to preside over Rector's execution during his 1992 presidential race. Many consider it a turning point in that race, hardening a soft public image. Some liberals tend to cite the execution as an example of what they perceive to be Clinton's opportunism."

This "liberal" concurred...

I cast my ONLY vote towards Clinton in '92 but really against ray-gun/bush I; in spite of this cowardly act on Clinton's part...

"In early 1992, as then-Gov. Clinton struggled to salvage his presidential candidacy in the face of the Gennifer Flowers scandal, convicted murderer Rector sat on Arkansas's death row. When his time came for execution, Mr. Clinton flew home from New Hampshire just in time to deny Rector a stay of execution. Rector, an African-American, had turned his gun on himself after killing a police officer at his mother's house. He blew his brains out, but he survived--condemned to function with the mind of a five-year-old. As he was put on his feet to walk to the death chamber, and with no trace of irony, Rector asked his guards to say hello to Gov. Clinton, whom he had just seen on television, and to save Rector his slice of pecan pie, which he planned to eat when he returned."

22. The retarded man, from a story related here today, had pecan pie as part of his last
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 12:38 AM by Tom Joad
meal. He asked, as the guards were leading him away to the chamber, that the guards keep the pie there, as he would like to finish it after they were through with whatever they were going to do that evening.

i mean, what makes it clear that this man was really not competent to know of his actions. Very few nations have the death penalty. and almost no nation condemns mentally retarded people to death. It takes a special guy....

12. No.
I am looking for the orginal story and trial acoounts culled from other than his website. None of those stories cover the orginal trial or the original newspaper account.

I am having an arugment right now with someone who lives in Savannah and says they found him with the gun standing over the body. And as always I need a bunch of evidence that this is simply not true.

13. Have you seen this dKos post?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/7/5/153347/3246

It at least has the date of the conviction and some other info from Amnesty International. I guess it's partly a question of what sort of sources your friend is going to believe. If Amnesty isn't considered a credible source, what is?

27. Thanks....
The Amnesty is not a credible source (HARD CORE RIGHT WINGER) for this guy and it has no info on the crime itself, just the same thing all the other sites have as to why he should be allowed a stay or reprieve.

The crime was a long time ago and I really would like to know how it was reported back then. What the trial testimony was, etc...... Not why he should be considered innocent. I got all that.

29. I was just thinking...
that with the date of the conviction, which was in that post, you could search archives of the local papers at that time. Though maybe they're not online back that far.

Is your friend trying to find something to prove his point?

32. Now it is me...
Intellectual curiostiy mostly. I want to know something other than the obviously biased reports. Somthing about the crime not something that explaisn his innocence.

And I have not been able to find anything on the Archives. the Savannah paper is pure crap as far as their website goes...Might be too long ago, but you would think they would have linked to the orginal story....

35. How about 7 of 9 witnesses recanting
their (obviously coerced) testimony.

And the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, no band of bleeding heart liberals, granted a very rare stay...

it's doubtful that you'd find much from the time of the trial and if you did, what the hell kind of bias would there be against a black man in GA in their MSM...

I honestly don't know whether this man is innocent or gulity. (setting aside how I feel about the death penalty in general). But, there are enough questions that he ought to get another day in court.

That is excellent news! We must keep the spotlight shined bright on this issue, & work to end the death penalty all together.

2 GA electrocutions caught on audio tape...

What's most amazing to me is that banality of their conversation/narrative of these State Murders...very chilling...

If they had tape from the boys feeding the ovens at Auschwitz, it would probably sound the same...
