3 car bombs kill 12, injure 19 in Iraq
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press writer

BAGHDAD - Three parked cars exploded in a predominantly Shiite area in Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 19, police said. The first explosion, which occurred about 11 a.m., targeted a passing police patrol, killing six people — three policemen and three pedestrians — and wounding nine other people, a police officer said.

Another parked car bomb about 500 yards away struck at about the same time, ripping through a bustling market of vegetables and household goods, killing three civilians and wounding five others, the policeman added.

Elsewhere, gunmen opened fire on an open-air market in Iskandariyah, killing a man and his wife as well as a policeman who started firing at them, another officer said.

Three bullet-riddled bodies of men in civilian clothes also were found at a construction site in Iskandariyah, a mostly Sunni Arab city 30 miles south of Baghdad, police said. The men, ages 25 to 35, had been bound by their hands and legs and bore signs of torture. The police officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears they too would become targets.

Wave of Baghdad car bombings kill 17

By Ahmed Rasheed

BAGHDAD, July 23 (Reuters) - At least 17 people were killed
and dozens more wounded by a wave of car bombings in
central Baghdad on Monday, most of them in a predominantly
Shi'ite district, police and witnesses said.

The bombings came as Iraq's deeply divided government
prepared to host a second round of rare talks between arch
rivals Iran and the United States in the capital on Tuesday
to discuss Iraqi security.

Three of four separate car bombings tore through Baghdad's
Karrada district on the eastern side of the Tigris River, two
of them exploding almost simultaneously near a government
office and a busy market area about 500 metres away.

One went off near a Karrada office which issues identity cards
to Iraqis. Police said that bomb appeared to target a passing
police patrol and that three police officers were among six
people killed. Twenty more people were hurt.
