Colorado's bankruptcy filings soar
Colorado's bankruptcy filings soar
Officials say 2004 won't be as bad; claims already falling

The Associated Press

DENVER -- The number of bankruptcies in Colorado during 2003 rose 21.3 percent over the previous year, the highest jump in the nation.
There were 25,786 businesses and individuals who filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003, up from 21,260 in 2002.

Brad Bolton, clerk of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court's Colorado division, said bankruptcy filings have begun to level off.

"For 2004, I do not expect the increase to continue to accelerate at that pace," Bolton said. "It's not conceivable. We are already seeing a leveling off."

Several bankruptcy lawyers said the jump in filings is mostly because of an increase in personal filings. Colorado's economy has struggled since 2000. According to a University of Colorado study, the state lost 34,600 non-farm jobs in 2003, its second straight year of job losses.

1. Nothing to see here...............
continue to shop and build up credit card debt consumers, elsewise the terrorists win.
This is serious stuff here, but I thought the economy was doing SO GOOD! I must be listening to the wrong news channels, perhaps FOX will give me true facts? :eyes:

3. I think we could say the terrorist have won......
They have put Americans behind barbed wire, the police and army in the streets and well why go on? And it has cost them little to keep us here. They all start talking to each other on the INTERNET.

7. My thoughts exactly
Not that I don't feel sorry for people who have to declare personal bankruptcy, but I've always heard that Colorado is a very Republican state. I guess all that rugged individualism doesn't pay off when you might want some help from the state or feds.

10. I wonder how many of those repugs filing bankruptcy
trash people on welfare. Can't pay the bills, huh? Need a helping hand? I'm sure they make no connection whatsoever.

4. Did anyone ask "Sparky" Bolton what would happen if the dollar loses...
...more ground, and/or the real estate market crashes, and/or the current stock market bubble bursts?

Until we get more of the unemployed back to work, we're definitely going to see more personal/small business bankruptcies. I know quite a few people that are barely hanging on as it is.

6. "I do not expect the increase to continue to accelerate at that pace"
So he does expect the increase to accelerate, just at a slower pace, right? This in no way indicates a decrease, he's just hoping "inconceivable" that it doesn't pick up even more.

Wow! Look at that *Bush economic machine go!

People need jobs to pay off debts, and the McJobs at Best Buy won't do it.

11. Thanks to the "Adults" In Charge
The GOP has a majority in both houses of the Colorado Legislature, the governorship, and every statewide elected office except one - Attorney General.

So any time anyone bitches about life here in Colorado, I sak them who they voted for in the last election. If they say they voted Republican, I tell them they got what they asked for. And suggest that if they want things to get better, they should start voting for Democrats.

13. People Will Still Blame Democrats
before they'll ever admit that they were wrong to vote Republican.

12. Will these people vote is the question!
The two questions are,

1) Will these people be too despondent to vote?

2) Will these people connect losing their jobs to the Bush Jr's leader ship?

Fact, the government has very little control over the economy! What the government does have control over are its leader ship skills. This means people are following their leaders have confidence in their policies and are willing to adhere to the agenda. There also needs to be a mention here, are the policies positive. This is mostly how the government controls the government.

Contract with America did away with a lot of controls and oversights the government had on the country. Of course this started with Reagan who did away with Savings and Loan oversight, which lead to meltdown of our lending institutions. Many other oversights missing are now coming to light and we are paying for them now.

It would very interesting to see which jobs the population is losing. But since a lot of these stats are no longer public due national security reasons (?), we can only speculate.

We really need a more open government at this time of history!
