Raleigh News and ObserverPressure continues to build for Coy Privette -- a longtime crusader for statewide Baptist causes and now a Cabarrus County commissioner -- to resign.
The state Republican Party chairman said she has sent Privette a priority-mail letter urging him to step down. She said she plans to release the information at 5 p.m. today.
"It was my opinion that he should step down immediately," state party Chairman Linda Daves said Thursday afternoon. "The letter said he's dishonored and disgraced."

Prosecutors said Privette, a former state legislator, paid a Salisbury woman for sex on six separate occasions this year. The 74-year-old retired pastor pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of aiding and abetting prostitution. He was sentenced to probation.
Cabarrus County Republican Party Chairman Chris McCartan delivered a letter to Privette's house Tuesday, demanding his resignation. The day before, the county GOP executive committee had voted to call for him to step down.

Privette "has totally and completely violated the public trust," she said. "Everything he had stood for over the years, he has basically violated that."
