With Marion Jones Busted, Feds Now Target Barry Bonds
Source: Editor&Publisher

By E&P Staff
Published: October 06, 2007

NEW YORK "While Marion Jones slips into sports infamy, federal prosecutors have reset their sights on their next target: Barry Bonds," the New York Daily News reports today.

"Sources familiar with the investigation into perjury and tax evasion charges against the all-time home run leader told the Daily News that the U.S. Attorney's office in San Francisco remains determined to indict Bonds by the time the grand jury expires in January.

The grand jury investigating Bonds was due to expire in July, but prosecutors were granted a six-month extension while they pursued charges against Jones and other targets related to the BALCO steroid-trafficking scandal.

The grand jury stopped meeting after the extension was granted, and is expected to resume shortly."

29. How do you "cheat" in bodybuilding?
There are no rules.

Any substance you want to eat, inject or otherwise insert into your body is allowed.

In fact, if you're looking at a champion bodybuilder, you're looking at a steroid user.

4. It's the DOJ's war on Black Folks which I posted about. White athletes
use steroids, too. Some of them used them while playing for W.'s baseball team. Some of them lied to Congress about using them. But the feds have recently started back their high profile indictments of African-Americans to try to convince Americans that Blacks are scary, so that white voters will vote Republican in 2008. And the MSM will play along, because they can never resist a story with a Black perp.

who sees NO RACE related point to be made here. Claiming racial discrimination when there is none drowns out real REAL RACISM.

Being on the balko customer list has nothing to do with race.

You could actually explain how race is related to this incident, but that would require effort, where your comment is slack and mentally crippled by chasing my language.

11. Thank you! Wolfie had about three stories this morning
about African Americans that were bad little boys and girls and needed to be punished.

Marion Jones really caught hell!

They will not rest until Barry Bonds in hung out to dry.

Clarence Thomas got almost a pass because his new book is about "his childhood in poverty" and that should be appreciated. :sarcasm:

Don't get me wrong, I am African American and Marion Jones sure did disappoint me.

Huum, and Lance Armstrong etc?

They did a puff piece on "Lil' Jen Bush in the WH. Explained how she has really grown up and is making her family proud. :puke:

Now let's talk about the MOB in the WH Wolfie .... what's the Chimp on? Steroids, Jim Beam?

All these other don't hold the future of our country in their hands. He does and he continues to get a pass! :puke:

25. Um... YAH. And Jose Canseco. As well as Barry Bonds. And yes, Lance Armstrong, too.
Frankly, Marion Jones better not be some sort of solitary sacrificial lamb here - throw her away and let them go free? I don't think so.

One other thing. I watched Jones's statement. By the end of it, I was crying with her. Never have I heard such a heartfelt, honest, humble, and frank mea culpa. And a classy one, too. EVER. Never to that depth and breadth. She verbally got down on her knees, to the whole world, to offer contrition with poise, elegance, and brutal honesty. No minced words or spin or qualifying statements or excuses or attempts to couch anything whatsover. None of that detached near-miss cop-out passive-tense "mistakes were made" shit. No blame game in the slightest. And all I could think of was - "now THERE's the kind of speech we are NEVER, EVER going to hear from the likes of bush, cheney, rove, contradicta, rummy, scooter, feith, perle, wolfowitz, gonzales, ashcroft, delay, hastert, frist, limbaugh, that-guy-whose-name-rhymes-with-Vanity, michelle malkin, o'really, coultergeist, or ANY of those schmucks and liars and war criminals. To me, Marion Jones is a GIANT next to them - for this single act alone. And they are the ones who should be out there now, to humble themselves and be honest for a change, own up on EVERYTHING, express deep, sincere regret, and beg public forgiveness. They're the ones who really NEED to be in front of cameras and mikes issuing statements like hers. They owe it to all of America AND to the world. And to all of the dead and those left to mourn. I won't hold my breath.

31. Mark McGuire admitted to taking a substance . . .
that at the time was not banned, but is banned now. Again, he never tested positive for a "banned" substance. Jose Conseco has admitted to taking steroids, all sorts -- but then again, he is not white, he is hispanic. Neither Mark or Jose have lied about steroid use to federal prosecutors or congress. I think Barry has done all of the above plus a lot more.

This is really about those Aaronites wanting to return the crown back to its rightful owner, Hammerin' Hank.

8. on a side note-the whole steroid busting thing by the Feds is a union busting operation
You don't really think that W mentioned in a SOTU because he was worried about high school linebackers in Iowa do you?

This weakens an extremely strong union-the baseball players association.

9. How do illegal drugs
and players refusal to be subjected to testing equate to union busting.

Pretty simple, don't do illegal stuff if you are not willing to pay for it.

These people are making fair competition impossible. Hopefully their records are stripped from the books and they are shamed when caught.

No matter who they are or what union they are a member of.

and this is big black eye to them and that effort.

I do agree about not using but if you can keep "competition" completely open and unregulated then individuals can take whatever steps they deem necessary to get into the system (MLB) or to stay in.

Conversely the NFL Players Association spearheaded the anti-doping/steroid league wide effort because they didn't want their players to feel any need to HAVE TO take such measures to make it or to stay in the league. This, in my opinion, is a much smarter approach for all concerned. Baseball however has much animosity in the relationship for many reasons but don't forget that the owners got flatout caught redhanded in the 80's colluding to keep salaries down-this is part of their long effort to regain an upperhand.

They are owned by corporations. Make them pay huge fines and forfeit their season. Then they will test their athletes every week.

Corporate sports suck anyway. Go watch the kids in high school. Go watch little league.

14. kids take steroids too
many people, who want to succeed in sport, take steroids or have taken steroids even when they never had a shot at breaking a record or being a star

i don't see why it is any ethically worse than taking any other supplement and all athletes take supplements

the problem with steroids is that they are actually effective in enhancing performance and for some reason we as americans resent effective technology to improve the human body

everybody is supposed to stand down and shut up and accept whatever genetic crap they were handed at birth, well, i don't quite see why, if we have the technology to improve ourselves, my body, my choice, you know?

obviously just my opinion but there it is

22. Pito, are you aware of the damage steroids can do to health?
Especially to teen-agers? Bad news indeed.

The problem is the kids emulate the stars. If stars do roids, so do kids...incidentally making criminal doctors richer, too.

There are plenty of strong arguments against sports doping, but that's the one that counts most to me.

40. remember arnold swarzenegger? (sorry can't spell)
the dude is a billionaire plus governor of the largest and most powerful usa state (even tho he is not from the usa) -- steroids made it possible

these drugs have good and bad, people are using them because of the good, they can be life changing

and for some people, a life as a nobody/nothing, maybe it wasn't going to be so wonderful anyway, yanno?

if you know the risks and you're willing to take the chance to be the best, why is it wrong because you were born in one year and not born in another year?

39. kids are not idiots
if you think kids are doing steroids only because "stars" do them, i call b.s. because kids aren't idiots and most know they will never be "stars"

they are doing it because there is only so far you can get without using technology, that's why we keep breaking records, because we have better technologies

yes, steroids forced underground do much harm, and all steroids like ALL medicines, like ALL technologies have risks

let me decide for myself and let kids/parents do the same

36. barring new evidence
they're never going to indict Bonds--he famously said he didn't know that he was taking steriods, he thought he was using flaxseed oil, which well might be a lie, but until someone comes forward to testify that Bonds took steriods knowingly, or they suddenly produce tape on which Bonds is heard to say something that indicates he knew he was taking sterioids, they just don't have a case, no matter how long they drag this out. The one man that could testify against him, his personal trainer, has gone to jail twice rather than testify against Bonds, so I just don't think it's going to happen.
