Jimmy Carter calls Cheney a "disaster"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday denounced Vice President Dick Cheney as a "disaster" for the country and a "militant" who has had an excessive influence in setting foreign policy.

Cheney has been on the wrong side of the debate on many issues, including an internal White House discussion over Syria in which the vice president is thought to be pushing a tough approach, Carter said.

"He's a militant who avoided any service of his own in the military and he has been most forceful in the last 10 years or more in fulfilling some of his more ancient commitments that the United States has a right to inject its power through military means in other parts of the world," Carter told the BBC in an interview to air later on Wednesday.

"You know he's been a disaster for our country," Carter said. "I think he's been overly persuasive on President George Bush and quite often he's prevailed."

Asked to comment on Carter's remarks, Megan Mitchell, a spokeswoman for the Republican vice president, said, "We're not going to engage in this type of rhetoric."

64. too many Democrats fear impeachment..
it surprised me when Carter suggested that hearings or impeachment was a bad idea. I agreed that removing these people are what elections are for, but impeachment plays a critical role as well. neither Cheney or Bush will be removed from office by Congress, but impeachment showcases the information needed to transform mere speculation into the unmistakable abuse of power and lawlessness of these rats.

Cheney is certainly a disaster for this country, yet the more the public knows and Democrats uncover..the more voters will support us in the next election. we must not allow torture and cover-ups to be classified in the name of national security.

83. both will be good for starters

this is a man who when ceo of halli(pick ur pockets) burton made an oil deal with iran.
and iran was on the ought not to trade list. he set up a fraudgelent off shore office that got caught ignoring the laW.(A WRIST SLAP WAS THE RESULT)
He has always acted like he was above the law.I think that if he is alive in 2009 he will face the piper. a good start would be to tie up all his earthly means in court.
evidently the leader of "iran" is bucking the "status quo" so now he wants to bomb them.
I say strap him on the first guided missle headed to "IRAN" AND GIVE HIM THE GO BUTTON
1000/1 SAYS HE'LL NEVER PUSH THE BUTTON.but he would if your son was on it!

And you can throw a few other names (Rove, Rumsfeld, Rice) in there as well.

Cheney and Bush don't rate very high in world history, either. Behind Hitler, but above many other megalomaniacs.

41. I "campaigned" for Jimmy (for Ga. Gov.) in Viet Nam in 1970.
That amounted to talking to fellow Georgians and making sure they were registered and had applied for absentee ballots. However, the monsoon and a typhoon delayed our mail so much in October 1970 that I doubt if my vote for Carter was ever counted. Mattered not, in the end.

BTW: Who was Carter's Lt. Gov. (elected separately)? None other than avowed racist, and former Georgia governor, Lester Maddox.

Both mr Bush and mr Chenney have been a catatrope for US... Your reputation are not exactly on the top of the world the last 7 year. And I guess it wil take a LONG TIME BEFORE US ARE ON THE TOP AGAIN...

And as one of the pepole here have sayd, when I write what he are saing I to hear his soft georgian dialect.. And I really enjoy it;). I am to young to really get him as a President, but I do belive he was one of the finer president US had, in the 20 century...

I suppose i am a stooge? Watching this country really go down the shiter is something i never would have imagined.

What can we do, my friends?

On some of my more self medicated evenings, i have said i am going up to the Smokies on a permanent vacation. Or just move out of the country. But that seems like a shitty move when i sober up.

Crazy thoughts running through my head.

This whole thing is fucking crazy..

Of course they are all too busy bending over backwards being "bipartisan", collegial, keeping their powder dry and desperately trying not to offend any voters or Republicans.

56. Mr. President....
....you're a great individual who speaks the truth; cheney is every bit a 'militant disaster' for the entire world....

....although I'm a hopeless cynic, if you were to recommend a course of action I was unhappy with, I would believe it to be true and necessary....

57. The White House will denounce Carter for his "overly critical remarks"
And, unfortunately, Carter will probably retract or apologise for his statement.

We've seen this before with regard to remarks about Dubyah. I wish Carter wouldn't back down.

But I doubt Jimmy will back down. It wouldn't be in keeping with his character. Who's he beholden to, anyway?

67. They'll probably try to "remind" everyone...
... what a failure Jimmy was at foreign policy, comparing his failed rescue mission in Iran to Bush's raging success in Iraq. Because, as every nitwit knows, military force IS foreign policy! Unlike Carter, Bush has achieved everything he set out to do! HIS plans worked, and are still working! Just ask the people on his payroll! Etc., etc., ad nauseam. :puke:

Bravo.

You continue to be an elder statesman whose advocacy for peace and the poor and disadvantaged speaks for itself.

Even as your church has abandoned you, there are many who stand by you.

Peace and grace to you.

86. I was living in Wyoming when he was first elected as that
state's representative. I've always been aware of who this guy was - and I was dumbfounded when the media, during the run up to the 2000 election, presented him as some kind of elder statesmen; a guiding hand for the inexperienced Bush - when in fact he was one of the top five most extreme right wing ideologues during his time in Congress.

Carter is completely right to call him out.

Edited on Thu Oct-11-07 10:57 AM by Prophet 451
I understand why you have to temper your words but a more accurate statement would have been:

"Cheney is a mass-murdering psychopath and his entire puppet administration has been founded on the principles of naked greed and sociopathic malice. The only difference between the Bush administration and Hitler is numbers".

91. CARTER GREATNESS
COMPARE CARTER TO REAGAN

(4 yrs to 8 yrs. So, use Average per year on some and Monthly average also.)

--------------------JOBS-------------------------------------------------

Real Increase—Carter-13.0% in 4 years—Reagan-17.5% in 8 yrs

Carter 10,488,000 in 4—Reagan 15,935,000 in 8.

Per month Carter averaged far more than Reagan
218,000 to 175,000.
--------------------------------------

Care to compare number of homes built per year. Don’t. Reagan killed S & L’s.
Care to compare GDP growth without massive spending programs.
Care to compare Increase in National Income and GDP to Debt Growth
Care to compare percent increase in Federal Revenues
Care to compare GDP Growth in “Real” dollars per year
Care to compare number killed overseas
Care to compare percent Increase in Defense Spending
Care to compare number of LIES told
Care to compare numbers of departments with SCANDALS
Care to compare numbers of administration members who were investigated, went to prison, convicted or charged.
Care to compare respect by foreign nations
Care to compare number of times president went to church.
Care to compare how historians rank them.
Care to compare as DEREGULATOR? Airlines-Financial Institutions-Transportation
Care to compare with which created FEMA
Care to check who was President when FISA was passed into law?
Care to check who started Centcom—As-RDJTF-Rapid Deployment Task Force-
(Reagan changed name to Centcom) -U.S forces designated for possible employment to Middle East.
Same President who said this—“The oil flow from the Persian Gulf is a vital interest to the United States and this country will employ any means necessary including military force to overcome an attempt by a hostile power to block that flow.”
Imagine the praise had Reagan made that statement.

When Carter left office it took 3.6 years of average income to purchase an average priced new home. After Reagan’s years it took 4.2 Years and now under Bush II 5.4 years.

When Conservatives hit on Carter as a “do nothing” administration they best not check the FACTS.

Inflation was Carter’s big handicap. Remember Oil Prices? Food prices?

Reagan took credit for whipping inflation. Blarney Baloney.
It was Carter’s hire Paul Volcker. Who whipped inflation (at cost of 5 million jobs)
Reagan had inflationary fiscal policies.

Evangelicals want a true, devout, Christian? They better look to a genuine one. Carter.

98. In my experience, Jimmy Carter is not prone to hyperbole.
And I'm sure he's aware of the "unwritten law" that says that a former President should never overtly criticize the sitting president (or the sitting DICK, as it were). (God knows, the MSM is bringing up that part of it often enough!)

So, for him to utter his sentiments so (for him) bluntly, I have to assume this is an issue that troubles him greatly. But even at that, he expressed it with considerably more tact than I'm capable of.

Miss Lillian raised her son well. Unlike some other mothers who come immediately to mind.
