Jon Stewart Re-Ups As 'Daily Show' Host
Source: NYT/AP

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: October 18, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- You'll be seeing Jon Stewart on the air with ''The Daily Show'' for at least three more years. And you can go online to see him on past episodes stretching back to 1999.

Stewart has signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him in the anchor chair of his Comedy Central ''faux news'' show through 2010, the network announced Thursday. His contract had been set to expire at the end of 2008.

In a separate announcement, Comedy Central unveiled a stand-alone ''Daily Show'' Web site stocked with video clips from every episode since January 1999, when Stewart took over. Visitors to that new site (separate from the Comedy Central site) can watch video clips from the most recent ''Daily Show,'' as well as the week's highlights and some 13,000 videos spanning the full Stewart era. There are also episode synopses, games and mobile content, among other features supplementing the Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning series.

Stewart, 44, joined the satirical newscast on Jan. 11, 1999, succeeding Craig Kilborn, its host since the show began in July 1996. Besides his anchoring duties, Stewart will continue as an executive producer and writer of ''The Daily Show.'' His Busboy Productions also produces the successful spin-off ''The Colbert Report,'' starring Stephen Colbert as a mock-conservative pundit....

2. It's odd that tonight I was actually wondering about this stuff.
How long he would be there, and when he first started. It seems longer than 1999.

What a great show. I remember when it started, I thought there was no way they could last. It was just too good. And I didn't think anyone could match Kilborn. I'm glad I was wrong.

I'm still trying to find equations that make it work. They're just a bunch of bright people.

They've been a life saver.

4. Ha! My Kilborn fan buddy has long since converted, but the discussion wasn't pretty.

on edit, I think he was a way bigger fan of Steve Carrell than Kilborn, but that's mere speculation. :-)

12. I didn't think anyone could match Kilborn either
And I was so wrong.

The Daily Show has done a fantastic job of selecting and grooming its "reporting staff" as well; they deserve a little love too! :toast:

Here's the link to their news team page-lists current and past contributors--well done.

Thanks Jon for re-upping, and from learning something from Bill Maher's network foray.

:wtf: (Not the usual congratulatory graphic, but it does nicely translate The Daily Show point of view.)

7. it's mostly because everyone else on the show isn't funny.
the daily show has become a pathetic shell of what it once was.

10. I would disagree
Aasiv Mandvi and John Oliver can be good at times. Plus, the show picked up Dimitri Martin for the occasional bit. Unless the "anchor" in question happens to be Samantha Bee, I typically find myself laughing at least once during the non-Stewart bits.

13. Really?
Well, to each his/her own, due. I think everyone on that show is funny -- especially the Back in Black section.

But you go ahead and enjoy Conan. I'm sure he's very nice for you.

22. I'm not a big fan of those two either
but Aasiv Mandvi is pretty funny.

But it's hard to beat Courdrey, Colbert, and Carrel. I wish Lewis Black was on more often.

15. It isn't easy replacing Carrel,Helms and Courdry
but to say that the rest of the show isn't funny is bs.

8. Jon's DA MAN!
He's has charm and charisma, funny and smart.

One thing that was interesting..I know a lot of little old ladies who look at him religiously. I know they would be disappointed if he was off the air...

9. Hooray
I had faith he wouldn't be wooed by NBC to take over Conans job. But they were sure trying:

http://www.jossip.com/nbc/nbc-wines-and-dines-jon-stewart-20070618

He must have realized rightly so that he just would not get away with language, bleeped or not, on a major network. But also, I can see NBC putting the screws on him to tone down the bite in his political humor as well, once they had him locked up in a contract.
I shudder at the thought.

Supposedly they did not get along very well. Craig has/had an ego.

16. Haven't seen the "Daily Show" since October 11 -- the show is seen at 12 Midnight here in...
southern Utah. We're going to see "My Fair Lady" performed in the Snow Canyon amphitheater this evening.

Good night and good luck.

Respectfully,

Radio_Lady and Audio_Al

19. Jon is a man on a mission ...

Jon is a funny man with a VERY serious mission. He has seen what has become of "journalism". He mirrors their ridiculousness. That gives him power.

The only lie Jon tells is that he is the "fake news". This is rarely the case. The Daily Show is pretty much all pointing out all the REAL fake news on ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/Faux and one upping them while actually being more accurate.

The spirit of Mark Twain, HL Mencken, and Will Rogers lives on.
