Stark Stands Behind GOP Accusations (refuses to apologize)
Source: KCBS

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Bay Area Representative Pete Stark told KCBS he refuses to apologize to Republicans after accusing them of sending troops to Iraq “to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement” during a debate over a children’s health bill.

...

The scathing comments drew immediate condemnation from Republicans, who demanded he retract it. "Congressman Stark's statement dishonors not only the commander in chief, but the thousands of courageous men and women of America's armed forces who believe in their mission and are putting their lives on the line for our freedom and security,'' said House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

When asked if he would take back any of his statements, Stark told KCBS “Absolutely not. I may have dishonored the commander in chief, but I think he’s done pretty well to dishonor himself without any help from me.”

He added the real dishonor is that Republicans refuse to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. “The fact is that I do support the troops in Iraq. They’re there fighting to protect our children here,” said Stark. “I think (Republicans) owe the troops in Iraq an apology for not protecting the children that those troops left behind.”

ChuckleNutz the War Clown does find an warped egotistical sense of amusement in being "a war president".

Show me a U.S. President who has ever chuckled while mentioning the severity of a World War, 1, 11, 111, (or any American military involvement for that matter

Plus, I personally share Rep. Stark's disrespect for * and every chickenhawk like him.

Finally, someone that dares to speak the truth and will NOT back down.

Now if his other Democratic "leaders" will borrow some of his True Speaking abilities we can get America moving again.

No more of this baby talk... " we don't have the votes, impeachment is not going to be on the table, we need to have dinner with the President and compromise bla bla bla bla bla."

You can't compromise with the DEVIL.

27. What Momentum
Edited on Fri Oct-19-07 12:26 PM by Annoyingly Logical
That veto is not going to get overturned. The Repubs are
nothing if they aren't stubborn and ignorant. Stark's stance
does something more important than attempting to convince them
to compromise (which they never do). It shows John Q. Public,
who is against the war, that the Democrats are against it and
see the hypocrisy that he does.

31. Please elaborate,

because from my perspective, the people costing us momentum are those that take two steps backwards every time a dem is brave enough to take a step forward and tell it like it is.

Those in our party who would now condemn or refuse to add their own voice as an echo to his, they are the ones who kill our momentum. Quit allowing the people who speak with feeling, real outrage, and founded accusations towards this President to be marginalized and pariahed by our party.

How bout this instead? JOin him until the din is loud enough that the Republicans are on the defensive for once. Join him until the Republicans have to actually prove to us that this war that is blowing our kids heads off, is one of pronciple and not some sick machination for profit.

to speak the unvarnished truth. The momentum is going to come when the jerks who voted against S-CHIP are kicked out of office. This bill gets passed and signed into law in the spring of '09, if not sooner.

143. You're not alone, but...
I've already found out that it's a bad position to take here.

You're not going to get any polite discourse, so I hope that you have a thick skin.

"Strategy" is an ugly word here, and people who were led to believe that the moment the Democrats gained control of Congress, that they would immediately initiate a coup d'etat and remove Bush/Cheney from office, send them in chains to The Hague for trial (merely a formality; everyone knows they're guilty) and then taken outside and shot, feel as if maybe the leadership is too meek with the Republicans.

Therefore, they're angry, and they take anything that doesn't fit that worldview very personally, and will respond to you in very personal terms, just like anybody over at the freerepublic site would if, as I did, state that "My Constitution trumps your Bible". That was an experience in eye popping, vein in forehead bulging, frothing at the mouth intolerance. Kind of funny, in a sad sort of way.

It hasn't been as bad here yet, but the post is still young; give it time.

You're not alone in taking off your glasses, pinching the bridge of your nose wincing and thinking: "Jesus H. fucking Christ, don't these people get it? The media will turn this into an attack on the Office of the President of the United States, and Bush will skate, yet again."

Fuck Impeachment! Indict Rumsfeld; get families of soldiers killed in Iraq to press a wrongful death suit against him, like the Goldman family did with O.J. Simpson. Nothing could be more effective right now, nothing.

Calling Bush a sadistic murderer who dances with drunken glee when every time he hears of a soldier getting his head blown off is not what Stark said.

But, the media will portray it that way and by default every progressive voice will be tagged with that brush.

Great.

Anyway, you've got a witness, but get ready to be attacked in a very personal way.

Forewarned is forearmed.

169. that may be so but what about the leadership?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3035495

You tell me what this means, I'm all ears.

If this goes any farther with regards to the leadership's capitulation, then what difference does it make what all the DUers you represent do or say?

The leadership should have immediately shown a united front and stood up behind Stark on this and said, Yeah, what he said, and by the way, it's time to put Impeachment right on the table, stuffing and all; the meat thermometer has popped and it's time to serve the bird.

It's about strategy and outthinking your opponent, not lambasting your side with personal attacks and emotional responses.

239. Really? You don't say?
Guess what? The republicons not only do the kind of attacks you speak of, but right or wrong and they are wrong, they are of the same mindset of blind loyalty to their king. No amount of strategy was involved with them as it's just pure brazen balls no matter what shit the republicons are into. The strategy of don't act or appear like they do, doesn't work and I'm quite sure I, and everybody else here, would love to know what the hell this great strategy would be that calls for dems to shutup and continue taking it while time ticks away on our rights, security, and the many men and women that are putting their lives and health on the line? Sorry, they have gotten away with this for 7 years now and dems have been cautious and even giving the benefit of the doubt too often. The results so far say there's no time for this great strategy that will never come and it is now a time to start acting. I am not part of the sheeple and I resent these republicons trying to *ssf*ck me while having the blood of many Americans on their hands along with many more civilians that were not the enemies of the American people until now of course, and this is why nobody can now argue that we aren't now fighting al Qaeda in Iraq for they've made so many more enemies with this farce of a war for oil while not pursuing the real culprits of 9-11.
Yes, let's wait and see if they have a big strategy planned that opening our mouths about injustices would thwart.
:wtf: :freak: :dunce:

251. Wow, the depth of your emotion and outrage...
Mean absolutely nothing. Go ahead, carry signs, call into some radio program and rant, rave and froth at the mouth about how great our country was until he came, and how great it will be when he goes.

The Republicans have been successful in pushing people into a emotional response that puts all the onus on one person, and letting the herd spit and scream and holler.

Let's make sure that the media gets plenty of coverage, okay? That way, when its on the fucking news, the REST of the country, will say "Damn, those people are nuts!"

If a Democrat gets elected, it's going to be because they were packaged and sold by cold-blooded political strategy, not because some idiot got up on in Congress and went on record and made the assertion that Bush finds it funny when our soldiers get their heads blown off.

Yeah, oooh, I bet that makes your heart beat faster, doesn't it? Somebody called Bush a psychopathic monster, and it's right there in the Congressional Record.

And what made it better was that our leadership all stood up behind him and have demanded that he be Impeached.

I must have missed that, because I can't find it anywhere. Send me the link, would you?

Thank god all the leading Democrats in Congress did back Stark, or it would've just come across nationally as the ravings as a sick old man, and that the Bay Area is populated strictly by nutjobs.

Yeah, send me the link, because I'm having trouble finding it.

and there is none as you know many have sat on it including many dems. I'll tell you what, I'll eat my words if you can tell me what this strategy in the making for 7 years is that needs us dems to shut the fuck up. It's ok when bush makes himself a total ass time and time again so no dem is allowed to risk saying their feelings on that jackass bush for fear of the media having fun with it? Sure, ok.

Because their strategy is to rile a bunch of people up until they can present them via the media to look like foul-mouthed, irrational angst-ridden nutjobs running completely on emotion; sore losers who can't accept the last two elections.

Looks to me that their strategy works pretty well.

So, spare me the spell check hint, and get with your buds who feel the exact same way you do, okay? That way, you all can tell each other that you're the heart and soul of the Democratic party.

It matters not one fucking bit that some people who have taken exception to my posts, and some of the others who have written have trouble accepting that strategy will win the Presidential election in 2008. Close your ears, close your eyes and go nananannana. That's fine. It doesn't change anything.

You want to excoriate (wow, I didn't even need spell check!) the idiot who's in there now, rather than look down the road, great.

If you want to push your views on me and present it as orthodoxy, nope.

I am a new poster to DU but a long time reader. Your posts strike me as wrong wing propaganda. The wrong wing is always claiming that liberals are too emotional (if you ever need a headache listen to Dr Laura- she goes on and on about this) Never mind that emotion and instinct are the primary force of humans actions that reason and logic sometimes are able to direct. A noble effort really.

But the wrong wing continually inflame the progressives in the same way bullies do with the same motivation. And instead of putting these monsters in their place the middle of the road once liberal politicians apologize and apologize again.

This can no longer be tolerated and I am so proud of Stark and Kucinich and every other person who stands up to the dragons of our age.

Where have you been; what planet did you come from?

The media is going to do their kabuki act without any regard whatsoever to what Stark says or does. At least while he's ranting he gets to pick his own words and his own issue.

"The media will leave the Democrats alone if they would just be quiet and let Bush have his way."

It's about time somebody got down and dirty with these sick, sorry sons of bitches.

Reminds me of the time Wes Clark said he'd "beat the shit" out of anyone who tried to impugn his patriotism the way they'd done with Kerry.

After a day or so of the predictable faux outrage from the usual suspects, Clark's spokesperson came out and pretended to apologize, saying the General had misspoken, what he really meant to say was,

He'd beat the LIVING shit out of 'em.

IIRC, donations to Clark's campaign spiked dramatically.

When will our side learn?

As in so many things in this situation- football, war- the advantage lay with the repugs who only had to conduct their usual obstructionist campaign. I'd say stark's comments were like a good power running back's slash into the D-line. I'd say back up maybe a step, get your balance and hit them again. I'd certainly not apologize.I'd point out Rush Limpall's stream of consciousness savaging of 12 year old boys and even younger schip beneficiaries( defended as just telling the truth) and ask the repigs why they couldn't gut up and take a little truthful commentary on their dear leader.

. . .Who knows? Perhaps others will follow the example and buck her will. (Perhaps even on her "off the table" edict.)

There's no harm in hoping.

232. But the American people are not the repukes

A) You have to stop worrying what the parrots are repeating in their close little cages. If you find that you can't stop worrying about what repukes are saying, turn off your radio and TV and just come to DU or go for a walk or something.

B) The American people get it.

They get it.

There is no way to spin ** anymore. He is spun out.

People like Stark will be re-elected (if Bushco doesn't off them) because the American voter has always liked bravery over any other trait in a candidate. An opinion but I think it's a valid one.

** stole the elections, but he could never have won an election because anyone can see he is a coward.

Stark verbalized what 75% are thinking in their pointy little American heads. That is the bravest, smartest strategy of all.

108. My letter to Stark's office:
Dear Congressman Stark,

Realizing that you are taking a lot of fire from Congressional Republicans and the Right Wing fringe for your remarks on the floor of the House yesterday, please allow me to congratulate you for making them.

Thank you, sir, for having the courage to say what I and so many fellow Americans have been feeling in our guts for so long and breathlessly awaiting to hear from just ONE of our elected representatives. Thank you for not backing down. It is a rare trait in Washington and, sadly, far TOO rare among the Democratic ranks.

Now is the time for this country as a whole to recognize the Bush Administration for what it is, and for what the rest of the world knows it to be: a lawless and heartless cabal of liars, ideologues and war profiteers who care more about global dominion and padding their own wallets than caring for our nation and those least able to care for themselves.

Stick to the message, Mr. Stark. You have nothing to apologize for. It is the White House, the Republicans in Congress and their enablers who owe America and America's fighting men and women the apology.

Godspeed.

Sometimes, the truth requires a bit of an edge- and that's precisely what this statement has.

If the shoe were on the other foot- would a Republican apologize and would they be "punished" by the electorate for having made it?

Think about it.

We need more of that, a helluva lot more. The dipshit needs to be dishonored to the point where he slinks back to Texas with his tail between his legs, never to return. Stark merely states the truth: * finds his job amusing, finds war amusing and doesn't care who dies so that he can look like the big man. Goddamn I hate him.

We don't have to be hammered by republican censorship.

Lets all get out and vote Democrat in 2008 and extend our lead.

Think of what we are going to do with the Executive Branch, the House of Representatives and the Senate all under our control.

With the next President having as many as three nominations to the Supreme Court (over eight years), we can bring the highest court in the land back to a liberal stance where it belongs.

Thank you Mr. Stark, we Democrats need more straight talk to get us moving in the correct direction.

continues to whimper and cower whenever Republicans throw a temper tantrum, the republicans will take back both houses and the presidency, and the Democrats will have deserved the beating. They have a real chance to grind the heartless bastards into the dirt and yet insist on caving in to fascists. It's time to grab them by the nuts and rotate.
Note to Rahm Emanuel: Get the fuck out of town if you can't stand with the truth. We, the grass roots/netroots have had it with cowards in leadership positions. Any Democrat who doesn't support Congressman Stark on this should be challenged in a primary. Enough is enough.

246. You have got that right! The time of going along in order to get along is over
Democrats absolutely need to win, and win big, in the 2008 elections.

We simply cannot afford anymore of the bush administration policies. This illegal war in Iraq is bankrupting us both in monetary capital and human capital.

Bush and his cohorts are sustaining this war for the finical gain of a few at the expense of many. The boys over at Sikorsky are high fiving each other every time a Black Hawk helicopter gets shot down.

The Army is buying 8700 MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles to the tune of $5.2 Billion. Three defense contractors, Navistar International, BAE, and Force Protection, are ringing the cash register. Our solders dieing from IEDs brought about the development of the MRAP. In December another contract for $8 Billion will be let out for even more MRAPs. Somebody is taking pleasure from cashing in on a 13 Billion dollar gravy train that started with American Solders dieing.

Sadly, however, I think Stark nailed it. One needs to simply review a video of Bush laughing as he spoke about WW-III - - and then shortly after that his infamous shoulder curling to see that Bush was quite amused at perhaps millions getting their heads blown off.

Ron Owens kept trying to get him to acknowledge that Stark went over the top with his comments about how kids are sent over to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement. The way he was talking to other people on his show that day, it sounded like it was "expected" that Stark should have at least acknowledged that he was sorry for something he said that went to far, and then "move on".

I say let him call a spade a spade! We need more of that! At least Bernie Ward last night said the same thing on that station!

267. Zidzi brought up a great point
It is a matter of protocol that no profanity will be used on the
Senate floor. When Cheney told Leahy to go fuck himself, it brought
not only dishonor on the executive, but was a highly dishonorable
breach of Senate comportment. I notice there have been far fewer
calls (as in none) for Sen. Leahy's removal from office than for
Cheney's.

Now Rep. Stark finally dares to say on the House floor what so many
are thinking, and wanted so desperately to hear from one of our elected
representatives: the stark truth that the Iraq conflict was started for
reasons that are less than honorable, and that giving financial priority
to this conflict over that of the health of the children of our country
is dishonorable. ABOUT FUCKING TIME, wouldn't you say?

It's not as if Rep. Stark has started up some new dangerous tradition,
or broken new ground. He is simply allowing himself the use of tactics
that have been used by representatives of the radical right since the onset
of this administration. If there was silence from the Republicans when Cheney
told Sen. Leahy to go fuck himself on the Senate floor, then their screaming
about Rep. Stark's comments now holds about much water as a used sieve.

It may blow over, but maybe we have gotten ourselves, courtesy Rep. Stark, a
useful soundbyte of our own: dishonor. Yes, Bush has brought dishonor on himself.
Starting an armed conflict for purely financial reasons, cloaking it in phony
patriotic terms to sell it to the masses, is NOT an honorable mission. It
dishonors our country as much as it dishonors the one who ordered it--even more
so, as the justification was false and he knew it prior to engagement.

Let that be something that our candidates--any and all of them--feel free to use
during the campaign. They may not be running against Cheneybush, but they WILL
be running against someone who has never spoken out against him. 'Tis enough.
Dishonor. Vote AGAINST it.

276. I think you read me wrong.
I was making a contrast, not comparing equals.

inexcusable comment and Stark's very legitimate
comment, and how the right wing's silence on Cheney
was so hypocritical compared to their explosion
of righteous indignation at Stark's remark.
