Pelosi rebukes Representative Stark
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON—House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco has rebuked her fellow Bay Area Democratic Representative Pete Stark for inflammatory comments he made about the war.

Stark accused Republicans Thursday of sending troops to Iraq to, as the congressman put it, "get their heads blown off for the president's amusement."

Republicans responded with outrage and demanded that Stark apologize—which he didn't.

In a statement late Friday Pelosi said that Stark's comments—made during a debate on children's health care—were, in her words, "inappropriate and distracted from the seriousness of the subject at hand."

No, Mrs. Pelosi - the false anger of the Republicans and now your capitulation distracts from the seriousness of the subject at hand. Mr. Stark summed it up wonderfully by not being afraid to say what needed to be said. It is a pity that the same cannot be said for yourself.

Moreover, Mrs. Pelosi doesn't seem too interested in stopping the war. Perhaps she would rather have a "good topic for Democrats" as opposed to actually doing anything about it.

147. No. Not just because his words were true, but because they were effective
Edited on Sat Oct-20-07 03:29 PM by Oak2004
I'm always aghast at how badly Democrats grasp the fundamental principles of effective campaigning.

The Republicans have always understood the need to apply the science of persuasion. And they teach it, starting at a young age. College Republicans aren't just expected to knock on some doors and pass out some flyers during their years in CR -- they're trained in how to run a campaign based on the best available research in marketing and sociology.

One of those principles is to make strong statements and go on the offensive. Voters like strength. They like it so much they put the Republicans in power long enough for everyone to see that the Republican agenda is far less desirable than Republican campaign techniques.

Democrats on the other hand seem to ape bits and pieces of marketing without really getting it -- for example, using focus groups in ways that cause them to drop or soft-pedal their agenda, rather then as a way to understand how to more effectively present their agenda. They miss the critical fact that people don't want leaders who run scared and don't lead.

Stark is doing everything right, not just because he's speaking the truth, but because strong words wins votes.

Strong words and deeds also increase the likelihood of actual bipartisanship in the halls of Congress, What fool would negotiate and compromise with people who will give in if they only wait it out and feign some sort of horror about some distortion of their opponent's position, views, or activities?

Addendum: How do I know what the Republicans do? I'm ex- CR.

I know you have stated you're a moderate before, but I cannot imagine why you're alright with Nancy Pelosi's extreme failure to force the impeachment or war issues with more arm twisting than what she's exhibited in these laughable "well, we tried, we just don't have the votes" maneuvers.

I find his comments the comments of a person fed up with the excuses and tired of reading about one more dead body of a soldier coming back in body bags for their families to pick up. How many years are you thinking are too much before righteous anger boils over and you speak the harshest of truth about the matter?

For millions of us, this invasion was clearly to please Georgie Boy in a farcical attempt to show he was a take no prisoners tough cowboy who was gonna get poppy bush's arch enemy for him so he'd be proud! They knew there were no WMD but we don't even hear about that anymore, we're there to 'stabilize the democracy' -- HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that's rich... no, wait, what's rich are the people cleaning up off this unholy invasion.

This is why the country is in the state it is in today, because Democrats were only too eager not to speak truth to power

I only hope the people in San Francisco are able to put up a viable candidate against her. It is really time to start cleaning up our party with people who truely represent us

106. It doesn't matter if troop deaths amuse Bush ...
... because it's bloody obvious that being a "war president" does amuse Bush immensely, and he can't be a war president without his war. Hence, Bush's amusement comes at the cost of American lives.

Stark shouldn't apologize. He can't possibly make the Democrats look any worse than the party's "what a buncha" leadership did by bending over in 2002 to get us into this mess and in 2007 to keep the mess going.

Could this be why we aren't seeing impeachment? How does this sound?

Bush and Cheney approach certain members of Congress with a proposition. If they don't initiate impeachment, and their districts get UNLIMITED money.

What else would keep impeachment off the table?

So this is a look at the side opposite of "maybe they've been threatened". It's the "maybe they've been rewarded" side of it.

40. Let me say--first off--
I was absolutely thrilled when Nancy became speaker. The ascension of the "fairer sex" to positions of authority and consequence is an important and historically valuable milestone.
Ms. Pelosi's transformation from a stuttering, painful to listen to, shell-shocked legislator to the smooth operator she is now was beautiful and enormously gratifying.

And now to the "but."
Why in the hell does she always feel that any mollifying she has to do is toward the crooks and gangsters on the nutlery side?

I realize that, as a powerful public figure, she has to be diplomatic and as ingratiating as possible, but why is it that she chooses to take her supporters and the supporters of truth and reality to task? I don't like to label people, especially unnecessarily, but, Damn!

She seems to idolize the vichy collaborators and to try to conform her behavior to their dubious standards. She gives up when there is nothing to gain from the collaboration, and sells out the very people she's supposed to be aligned with.

Her inability to recognize the desperate need for truth and brutal honesty in the face of a crumbling America calls her leadership, incorruptibility and, well, patriotism into question.
I don't like that at all.
Compromise is an important part of managing and legislating, but there are simply some things one cannot and must not compromise on...ever!

... into anything resembling a serious shift in this country's direction.

My guess is that Nancy is not the only non-oaf available in the Bay Area to represent that longstanding bastion of progressive thought. In fact, as a Cal grad myself, I know she isn't.

Don't misunderstand me. I don't want to wake her up -- I want to replace her. If not with another qualified Democrat in her House seat, then in the next selection of the House Speaker.

She is a huge disappointment to many of us.

Edited on Fri Oct-19-07 10:04 PM by ...of J.Temperance
When she stands for re-election in San Francisco....so I pity ANYONE who launches a challenge against her ALREADY, because they're going to look pathetic....on a scale of 1-10, they'll look pretty much a straight 10.

So who would you replace Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker with? John Murtha? Yeah, he's great, he's pro-Fundie, anti-abortion....I mention Murtha because, well you KNOW how the Left-Left and Left again Democrats were all rah-rah-rah about Murtha WITHOUT ACTUALLY knowing a THING about John Murtha's voting record.

Hope she'll pay you more in the future -- she can afford it.

Her appearences back in her home district are drawing more and larger protests. I think a good opponent might just surprise everyone (especially you) in the next election.

Now get busy. I notice you are the only one repeatedly posting pro-Nancy responses on this thread. Again, tell Nancy that I think you deserve a raise.

As for her replacement, we've never had a Black Speaker, so I would nominate John Conyers for that reason and a host of others. But there are probably four dozen (or more) Congresscritters who would make a better Speaker than Nancy.

It's about time our side vocalizes. We've been taking a lot of abuse from that side of the aisle for years now. If our standing up to them causes some discourse and anger, too bad. We NEED to speak up otherwise they'll just continue to run us over. It's not like they'll suddenly feel bad or sorry and stop. They don't give a rats ass, they wont stop - we HAVE to speak up. It may be the only way to redeem ourselves in the eyes of other countries as well as our own. This says to the world we do NOT agree or go along with all this BS.

Nancy Pelosi did the right thing, because Congressman Stark's comments were highly inappropriate.

71. I'm in firm agreement with Nancy Pelosi, and here's why
The debate was regarding children's healthcare....Congressman Stark in the middle of that debate, had this rant that had NOTHING to do with children's healthcare.

His comments, the one's about kids getting their heads blown off, were obviously very bombastic, thus, they've got the attention, thus the attention has been deflected away from the ACTUAL debate, which was about children's healthcare.

So yeah, Nancy Pelosi is correct, not only were Congressman Stark's comments incredibly inappropriate, they also, unfortunately distracted from the debate at hand.

The right-wing attack machine is allowed to issue the ugliest forms of political attacks on a daily basis, but we Democrats are supposed to be polite and keep our voices down.

Yours is the sort of spineless, Democrats-as-punching-bags attitude that a whole lot of us are sick to death of. for power and profit? I don't think Stark's words came anywhere near that obscenity. You're a mother, Nancy, why aren't you and your fellow Democrats marching into the Halls of Power with their photos along with the US citizens who've been killed and maimed? Why are not all of you standing on the steps with those photos and telling this murderous regime that you won't fund their slaughter anymore? Why are you not shoving those photos in the faces of the miserable war-crimes supporters who demand apologies every time someone tells anything approaching the truth?

And for those here who buy into the sorry spectacle of the war-crimes enablers mewling and cowering every time one of the murderous junta thinks that the Orwellian veil they cast over our slaughter gets even the slightest tear, I suggest a little trip around the web to look at the burned and blasted infants and toddlers dead at our hands. Then tell me that the Stark's mild - yes mild, in the context - remarks deserve any sort of censure. They are not even the least of what should be said.

The corporations don't care who is in power, as long as the people they place there can be bought and controlled. And without campaign finance reform, things will continue on in this cozy little way -- benefiting the few at the expense of the many. But, we aren't going to achieve campaign finance reform until we get the DLC Democrats OUT.

This is the letter I just sent to Pelosi. I hated doing it but I've just had it up to here with this s*it!
---
Honorable Representative Pelosi,

Your lack of actions of late regarding Iraq funding, domestic spying and many other issues is a total embarrassment. Now you denounce Pete Stark for voicing an opinion shared by me, and apparently also by the majority of your constituents. I am fed up with your refusal to play hard ball with the Republicans. You head the opposition party in the House, start acting like it. If you cannot do so then I ask you to relinquish your position as Speaker and allow someone like Mr. Stark, who apparently has the wherewithal to act appropriately given the situation, to take your place. Please take Nevada's Mr. Reid with you, as he seems to be as ineffective as you are at getting anything substantial said or done. I have always voted for you, Ms. Pelosi, but from now on I will very seriously consider not doing so unless you, at the very least, change your behavior and act as your constituents would have you, or get out of the way and let someone who will into your position. I am disgusted by your lack of forcefulness and your apparent concern for your position over the wishes of your constituents. You are not elected to be our leader, you are elected to be our representative; start representing our wishes or get out of the way.

Regretfully frank,
My Name

Here's mine:

Madame Speaker,

You state in your rebuke to Mr. Stark in response to his passionate remarks re S-CHIP that this comments distracted from the serious subject at hand.

On the contrary, I accuse you of distraction by your weak-kneed and inappropriate public condemnation of fellow Democrats, Stark and Democratic activists, MoveOn and Code Pink. Buying in to the Republican faux outrage of the opinions of Democrats perpetuates the distraction from the issues at hand; thus, your response was politically inept. Democrats deserve better than a Speaker who consistently capitulates to Republican talking points. A better response, a Democrat's response, would have been to point out that is the Republicans who are attempting to raise a smoke-screen to cover their failure to represent America's childrnn and the will of 80% of the American population.

81. Is this why we see no progress from Nancy?
"Holders of high office typically avoid discussions like that because it makes them look, well, political. But Pelosi did not hesitate to plunge into the political, explaining that 'it was so important for us to bring the president's numbers down two years ago on Social Security' because it discouraged Republican candidates from running for Congress. Pelosi may have realized that her words sounded too calculating, for at one point she begged the reporters' indulgence for her to 'be allowed a partisan moment.' She smiled at her joke, then chuckled."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/09/AR2007100902006_pf.html

Is this it, right here? Think about it for a second: to keep Bush's numbers low, the situation -- be it Iraq, SChip, FISA, whatever -- must remain the same. There can be no improvement, otherwise Bush and the GOP could get a boost from any Democratic success. Is this why we have all the "Sit down and shut-up" and "keep your powder dry" bullshit we have been seeing from the Dem leadership in Congress?? Is everything about taking the Presidency and Congress in 2008 at any cost, regardless of what type of political manuevering must be done to accomplish it? Even if it means leaving our troops to rot in Iraq, quashing dissent within the party, throwing our liberties "under the bus", or excusing a criminal administration?

If the GOP wins in 2008 we'll have a new war every year or two until they are out of office. They'll take away our rights and control just about everything.

The rest of the stuff you mentioned can be taken care of once the GOP is gone. For now, admonishing Pete Stark for uttering comments that were way out of line isn't something worth getting worked up over.

86. Here's Mine. I didn't swear in this one like in another thread.
Dear Ms Pelosi:

The temerity you have shown by rebuking Representative Stark is both demoralizing and disappointing.

You have so removed yourself from the reality that the rest of this country is now living in that you cannot realize that Representative Stark's comments are quite appropriate and long overdue.

Please do not speak of the issues of civility when your lack of leadership, along with others in the Party that so many fought hard to elect, has become an affront to common decency.

What numbers are you looking at that would make you commit such an offensive act as to rebuke an individual who is finally speaking truth to power? Poll numbers? Lobbyist numbers? Certainly not the numbers of uninsured children; dead service men and women; wounded service men and women; or the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqi civilians.

You and your "leaderships" recent actions bring shame upon this country.

When are you going to demand of yourself to do the honorable thing and stand up for humanity.

Life is not a chess game; the world's population is not made up of pawns to move around with the Beltway crowd.

Yes, you may not have the votes, but in the end, history will show that at least someone other than Representative Stark stood up and took notice.

Please, stop dancing to the regime's tunes. We cannot afford to pay their pipers anymore. We have already lost so much.

If Pete Stark were Speaker of the House, we wouldn't be in the situation we're in now. There would finally be a REAL opposition to the Chimpenfurher.

How can you say that when that psychopathic fuckwit joked about WMDS when US Troops were dying..

You don`t remember , watch www.wewillnotbesilenced.com (part 1)

Pelooseri should be hammering away at these jokes, Stark was 100% right and its about time more people started calling it as it is, instead on enabling this lunatic another day longer.

Fodder for the Reslugs???How about 4000 US Troops dead for a lie, how about 1.2 million Iraqis dead.

Jesus Fucking Christ what is wrong with people like you?????????????????????????????

Pelosi took an oath to defend and protect the Constitution. She has betrayed that oath, and the Republic, by protecting the tyrant in the White House from being held accountable for his many crimes.

What will Pelosi do next, endorse the pardoning of Bush and Cheney by a Democratic President?

119. What a sad bunch of sacks
Rush Limbaugh makes a comment about soldiers and all Republicans everywhere join together to explain how it might have sounded harsh, but when you understand the correct way to parse it, he really does support the troops and has from the very beginning. You see, you just didn't hear it correctly in context and Rush is such a fine American that you are really loathsome if you think this opens him up to criticism.

Pete Stark makes a comment in passing about how soldiers are getting blown up for Dumbya's amusement and half the posts on Democratic(?) Underground explain how it was really too harsh, Nancy was right about it detracting from the discussion of children's health insurance. You see, you can't go around saying things that will upset people because then they might think you are criticizing them.

No wonder the Democrats need 67 votes in the Senate to accomplish what the Republicans can with 40.

126. "The subject at hand," apparently...
...is the very serious business of failing to end the war or to impeach its instigators, along with a touch of legalizing everything the President wants to do and caving to his vetoes.

Inappropriate? With this single comment, Stark accomplished about as much as any other Democrat has lately. What matters a "distraction" from nothing? I should think she would welcome that.

Rather than the original quote of:

"You don't have money to fund the war or children," Stark accused Republicans. "But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement."

Perhaps it should of read:

"You don't have money to fund the war or children," Stark accused Republicans. "But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's corporate sponsors."
