Former Green Bay Packers receiver Max McGee died late Saturday afternoon following an accident at his home in Deephaven, Minn., KARE TV, Channel 11, of Minneapolis-St. Paul reported.

Police were called to his home around 5:20 p.m. Saturday on a report of an unconscious man who had fallen off the roof.

Emergency crews arrived and performed CPR on McGee, 75, but their efforts were not successful and he was pronounced dead, KARE reported

Family members say McGee was blowing leaves off the roof when the accident happened, the station said.

Super Bowl I, the unlikely hero - overcomes a huge hangover to be the star, seven catches for 138 yards. Lombardi, Nitschke, Taylor, Starr, Jerry Kramer - that was a team of Hall of Famers, but ol' Max outshone them all that day. Those of us old enough to remember won't forget it. P.S. - if you're over 70, stay off the roof.

1. Caught the first TD in Super Bowl History - God Bless Him
What the hell is a 75 year old doing on the roof? Let the neighbor kid blow those leaves off. I'm 53 and my knees won't even let me get close to the house with a ladder.

2. Should had let the tornado blow them off.
Surely the winds were blowing hard enough for that the last few days.

5. What a shame
He obviously was in pretty good shape to be climbing up on a roof. I had to do a little traipsing about on the roof after Katrina and that was traumatic enough.

3. One of the old breed - party Saturday night play on Sunday
Lombardi was constantly on his ass but what could he say? Mcgee was one of my heroes for his anti establishment attitude.

WTF ya gonna do about leaves on the roof? I'm 66 and I'm up there with a blower 3 or 4 times a year. Wife gets pissed but we don't want somebody up there withoout insurance. Fortunately we're in CA so our roof is not very steep.

6. Blowing leaves off the roof? Why?
I've never done it on my house, and I've got a 30 foot tall white birch that hangs over the roof. The wind blows the leaves off.

If he was worried about clogging the gutters, buy gutters with built in tops. It's not like he couldn't afford them. He was instrumental in starting Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurants, and sold his stock for about 20 million dollars.

I'm sorry to hear of his death, as odd as it apparently was. He was an integral part of the early Lombardi Packers, and of course holds a position that will never be replaced as the scorer of the first Super Bowl touchdown.

8. He Was A Notorious Cheapskate
... somehow, the cost of a professional cleaner was too much for him.

What a damn shame it ended for him that way.

4. Good bye Max

Say hi to Ray Nitschke. For those that don't know, I am a life long Packer fan. I got a new black and white TV for Christmas one year. (I wanted a mini bike) I watched the ice bowl in B & W on that set in my room.

7. He was a tireless helper to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee
He raised millions and millions of dollars to help fight Juvenile Diabetes, which affects one of his sons. He founded the McGee Center for Juvenile Diabetes in Milwaukee to help his son and countless others fight this terrible disease.

He will be missed for his contributions to the Packer organization and to local charity.

Good Bye Max, we will miss you.

9. Keith Olbermann paid tribute to him at Football Night in America halftime tonight --
a nice piece that emphasized how much of a character he was. I think Keith said his wife told him not to get on the roof.
