Taxpayers help pay for Conan's TV tapings in Toronto

http://www.canada.com/national/story.asp?id=E8F90892-5E2B-4F33-8BEE-974BEF0A7B1E

'OTTAWA -- Canada's taxpayers are helping foot the bill for late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien's upcoming Toronto tapings.

The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and the federally funded Toronto03 Alliance program have put together $1 million to pay for the relocation of the cast and part of the crew of NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien, a New York City-based talk show aimed at 18-to-35-year-olds .

Proponents of the plan to bring the show to Toronto say the publicity generated by the show will far outweigh the cost to taxpayers.'

This is a good example of right-wing spin. If anything, the cost in bringing the show to Toronto (1m Can, 750k US) will be well offset by the financial benefits to tourism and the like. As Toronto is still rehabilitating its image after the SARS outbreak, good news stories like Conan's tapings in Toronto can only have a positive effect. Dumbasses!

1. would Late Night
be moving to Toronto for good? While I don't agree with tax money being used for that purpose, I do love Conan O'Brien!

4. Agreed.
Toronto is still reeling from the financial effect of SARS and the show would amount to a terrific commericial.

Not sure why the RW idiots at the Post would care one way or another.

5. They're dogmatic. They will turn any story into a 'how dare govt tax us'
story. They're still working from the Conrad Black playbook it seems.

6. A few years ago, right-wing Repubs in Congress...
Griped about how much money the Federal Government put into staging the 1994 World Cup Soccer tournament. Even some Repub mayors of a few of the host cities told them to shut up about that one! :D

Conan, in Toronto...all I can say is, Lucky Toronto!:7

Just imagine...Triumph skating on the ice at the Air Canada Arena...:eyes:

B-)
