Musharraf's Emergency Rule May Spur, Not Deter, Al-Qaeda Threat

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's imposition of emergency rule to fight terrorism without legal constraints may lead to worsening violence in the world's second-largest Muslim state, analysts say.

``Imposition of emergency does not help the military fight its battle against terrorism,'' said Lisa Curtis, senior research fellow at the Washington-based Heritage Foundation. ``The security services will also be distracted now with efforts to control civil society rather than focusing attention on preventing terrorist attacks.''

Lawyers and leaders of opposition parties yesterday condemned Musharraf's decision to suspend citizens' rights. As many as 150 lawyers and human rights activists staged a protest near judges' homes in Islamabad.

Police were deployed around the capital and paramilitary forces positioned at the Supreme Court and Parliament buildings. There were no extra deployments of law enforcement personnel in the commercial capital of Karachi.

Interference by the Supreme Court has paralyzed the government and demoralized his troops, Musharraf said in a televised speech yesterday

2. our local guard unit is being called up for the second time
and they are headed to Afghanistan. i think they would be better off going to iraq because i have a bad feeling Afghanistan is going to be a lot worse.

3. Now this is a REAL danger that the Idiot did not forsee but others
like Biden and Edwards did quite a while ago. Unfortunately we have an idiot for a president who will only lead us into worse times because of his stupidity.
