Denver Post Owner Skewers Colorado's Governor (D) in Rare Front-Page Editorial
Source: Colorado Confidential

Denver Post owner Dean Singleton's front-page editorial attacking Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter on Sunday appears unprecedented in its name-calling, at least in the newspaper's recent history.

The editorial criticizing Ritter's executive order allowing state workers to join unions is only the third front-page editorial in the Post in the past decade, according to a newspaper database.

... This time, Singleton ordered up an editorial that referred to the governor as "Jimmy Hoffa," "a toady for labor bosses" and "a bag man for unions."

"The language used and the placement demonstrate a certain hysteria that stems from Mr. Singleton's personal dislike of organized labor," Ritter's spokesman, Evan Dreyer, said Sunday. "I think the degree of the personal attacks is a bit surprising for a newspaper of this caliber. To stoop to this level is unbecoming."

... The language in the editorial was so raw that the staffer predicted some distress among people in the newsroom.

1. Are there any Union members at that paper?
If so, they should wildcat strike at once. At the very least, I would hope that all members of any Labor Union in the entire state of Colorado just bombard that paper, and Mr. Singleton in particular, with letters of disgust. Demand a retraction.

3. The front page of a newspaper is for news. Editorials belong inside. By putting the
editorial on the front page Mr. Singleton is trying to confuse readers as to what is news and what is opinion. This is a really sleazy move on his part. The editor of that paper would resign if he/she had any balls.

8. Singleton sounds like either William or Nackey Loeb
of the Union Leader (New Hampshire). Totally unabashed conservatives (both dead now). Reported news, but had no qualms about using it as a mouthpiece when they needed it. They're well known enough because it's the largest circ paper in NH (of the primaries), but also the most slanted. I refuse to subscribe to the paper. The Loebs can rot in hell for all I care, and it doesn't sound like the Singleton's will be far behind.

13. "forcing collective bargaining on thousands of state employees"
Talk about spinning sideways.

As a retired Colorado State employee, I applaud Ritter for this move. I was the first person at Human Services to join the Federation of Public Employees and almost immediately was involved in a class action suit against the state that we won, btw. So many shenanigans against employees by the personnel system. We sure needed a union that wasn't in the pocket of the Repub legislature. Collective bargaining was a distant dream.

Bravo Ritter! :applause:

15. Singleton is a piece of shit
Ritter should be investigating that property Mr. Singleton bought for cheap back when the city of Denver owned Winter Park.
