Bolivarian students want to launch talks with opposition students

A group of leaders of the Bolivarian Students' Federation Friday appeared in the Ombudsman Office to request cooperation in order to launch talks with the students opposed to the Venezuelan government.

The group delivered a paper claiming they have been "vilified" by local television news channel Globovisión, and accused the TV network of waging a "terrorist" campaign against them.

Further, Neomar Solórzano, a representative of the Venezuelan Youth Institute, asked the Ombudsman Office to protect the Bolivarian student leaders, as they claim they have been "attacked" over the last 72 hours by Globovisión.

Opposition Violence at Venezuelan University - What Really Happened
November 9th 2007, by Rodrigo Trompiz and Jorge Martin - Hands Off Venezuela

According to eyewitness reports from Hands Off Venezuela members, violence broke out yesterday in Caracas when opposition students arrived back from a peaceful demonstration against the proposed constitutional reforms. Apparently frustrated by the lack of violence, a group of about 250 of the opposition students (many from other universities) went straight to the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) to the School of Social Work which is a stronghold of revolutionary students inside UCV.

There, a group of revolutionary students was campaigning for a yes vote in the referendum. They had an assembly for students/teachers/non-teaching staff in the morning and were putting up posters and giving out leaflets.

They were then attacked by the opposition students who surrounded the School. Molotov cocktails and stones were thrown, the toilets were destroyed, the door of the Students Centre (Bolivarian dominated) was burned down, and around 150 people (students, teachers and non-teaching staff) were trapped inside the building for several hours, with the violent opposition students trying to force their way into the building to lynch them.

Some of the students inside the Faculty are nationally known Bolivarian student leaders (including Andreina Taranzon who spoke in the debate with opposition students at the National Assembly earlier this year at the time of the RCTV protests). They managed to call the state TV and reported live on what was happening.

2. It reminds me of the violent student protests of the 1960s in France.
Except most of the anger and rage were directed upward at the government, not at each other.

3. It's the new frontier for the opposition, once it realized its traditiontal methods have failed.

They've simply engaged right-wing students to carry on the work for them in this phase, apparently, and there is a backlash to that tactic.

On edit, adding article:

Here's how the organized, U.S. taxpayer supported opposition has positioned its moves against the elected Venezuelan government, from a pro-government source:

Sumate reverts to blackmail in bid to recover leadership quota among opposition

VHeadline.com News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue writes: Sumate is up to its old tricks again as its president, Maria Corina Machado calls on President Chavez to postpone the constitutional reform.

Machado complains that the whole constitutional reform process in is in the hands of one person ... "we know that he controls the electoral power, the National Assembly and the Supreme Tribunal of Justice."

The only way to avoid violence, Machado insists, is to postpone the referendum.
(snip)

Continuing the threats, Sumate declares that it is holding the President personally responsible for any violence against opposition marchers and opposition marches.

Sumate's Maria Corina Machado and friend.

You'll never see a photo of anyone from the Venezuelan government being invited to Washington, but members of the opposition, opposition media, business community, some influenced Venezuelan military people, and coup plotters have ALL been guests at the White House.

7. 'Vote for Bush, or you WILL suffer more terrorist attacks in the U.S.'
Sumate--a US-funded "opposition" group in Venezuela--and its "president," Maria Corina Machado, lays out the "mafia protection racket" script that is being used to try to undermine, destabilize and destroy the democratic process in Venezuela--to wit, 'unless the rightwing minority gets its way, there WILL be more violence."

We've seen this movie before.

Robbery gangs hit a neighborhood; then security companies hit the neighborhood, offering locks, security cams, security alarms, window bars, personal defense products and guard dogs.

Drugs and weapons traffickers murder 50 candidates, their family members or campaign workers in Guatemala, in the recent elections. The rightwing candidate (former head of military death squads that slaughtered 200,000 Mayan villagers in the 1980s) puts the image of a closed fist on his campaign posters and offers a "crackdown" on violence and a heightened police state as the remedy.*

Anthrax envelopes get mailed to congress members and news media. An antiwar Senator's state-of-the-art small airplane falls out of the sky for no reason, with two experienced pilots on board, on a clear day with no wind. Message delivered. Congress votes to give away its power to declare war to George Bush, and simultaneously (in the same month) passes legislation to fast-track electronic voting machines, all over the country, run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations. The one thing guarantees unjust war (and massive war profiteering); the other provides the means to shove the unjust war down the throats of the American people.

Open the routes of illicit drugs and weapons traffic--indeed, fund it at the other end with billions of dollars in military aid, some of which makes its way to rightwing paramilitary drug traffickers and death squads, and some of which is used to destroy small peasant farmers and their small local coca leaf production, and drive them off the land in favor of big drug lords. Flood the U.S. with illicit drugs, then loot the taxpayers blind for the neverending "war on drugs" and the prison-industrial complex.

The invulnerable U.S. is shocked and awed by what would seem to be an impossible attack on its air defense system, skyscrapers are hit by commercial airplanes and collapse into their own footprints, 3,000 people are slaughtered--and the "remedy" is TWO TRILLION DOLLARS for a war against a country that had nothing to do with the attack, and curtailment of AMERICANS' rights under the Constitution, including loss of the right of habeas corpus, loss of privacy to massive domestic spying, and the creation of a lawless mercenary army (Blackwater) on U.S. soil.

Permit the pharmaceutical and insurance corporations to loot public health programs, then offer MORE pharmaceutical and insurance corporation control of those programs as the remedy.

Pollute the air, pollute the water, pollute the food and kill all nutrition value, pollute homes and yards with toxic cleaners, toxic pesticides and rug and furniture materials and additives, IMPORT poison-laden products from other countries, addict people to a sedentary lifestyle in front of their TV sets, then charge ever increasing prices for medical insurance and health care.

Create a nuclear power industry that uses extremely dangerous materials, then create a billionaire dollar industry for nuclear cleanups and the disposal of extremely dangerous waste products.

These are classic mafia protection rackets.

Whether the violence of them is swift and bloody, or slow and corrosive, the fascist M.O. is to create fear, danger, anxiety, anger, ill health, insecurity and chaos, on the one hand, and offer a profitable "remedy" for it, on the other, with the "cure" being as bad as--if not worse than--the "disease."

The operatives who create the "danger" in Venezuela, of course, are masked. It will be hard to trace the shooters of unarmed, rightwing protesters back to their employers. It will be difficult to sort out other "incidents" of chaos-making. And the "remedy," according to Sumate, is to suspend the democratic process, or else there WILL be more violence.

But how many times do we have to see this pattern before we recognize it--that the "mafia protection racket" of fascists like Machado--or Bush/Cheney--is laundered through "respectable" political groups, through innocent-looking "non-profit" groups, and through "legitimate" global corporate predator businesses.

Machado's US taxpayer funded, "non-profit," political group is a shill for Exxon-Mobile, which is smarting under the Chavez government's restrictions on its profits, and has appealed to the World Bank--those shoddy loan sharks--to "negotiate" a more favorable Venezuelan buyout of oil infrastructure. And they DON'T want the Chavez government to be given any more clout by the voters of Venezuela, to curtail their oil profiteering and their vicious worldwide power-mongering. And, of course, Machado is just a little mafiosa in the much bigger context of Bush Cartel shilling for the oil and war industries.

In Venezuela, the government (because it is legitimately elected and democratic) is RIGHTFULLY taking the side of the people in this world war for resources and profits. In Venezuela, we see a small piece of the war. In Iraq, we see a big piece of it. And it's all the same fascist gangsterism. Machado's little threat is an echo of the bigger Bush Cartel threat. If they don't get their way, they WILL harm us. The way to avoid the harm they promise, is to relinquish democracy.

4. Hopefully the people of Venezuela
Will vote for a strong future and reject the constitutional reforms. It is sad that it has resorted to violence but I guess desperate times do sometimes conjure up desperate measures. A country that hangs in the balance. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

6. You are entitled to your own opinion
and so are the people of Venezuela. The problem is is that there is a large group of agitators who want the referendum to be scrapped altogether, taking the chance for all voices to be heard on this issue away. They boycott elections, and now try and stop a referendum. They complain nonsensically about Chavez "stripping away democracy" yet refuse to participate in it. WTF?

(Judi Lynn: I read that one of the people shot wasn't even a student. Very suspicious stuff went on and it's hard to get all the facts on this one - at the moment, anyway)

9. The reforms will pass. And now you are on the record
as vilifying Chavez and the supporters of his government when you believed they resorted to violence but condoning the violence of the opposition.

from "Globovision," which may help fill out the picture:
The president of the Municipal Institute for Youth, Neomar Solorzano, reported that a group oficialistas will be Tuesday in the National Assembly waiting for the progress of students to discuss constitutional reform.

Explicó que el pasado viernes se creó el Comando Nacional Juvenil Zamora para promover entre los jóvenes venezolanos la aprobación de las modificaciones a la Carta Magna. He explained that last Friday established the National Command Youth Zamora to promote among young Venezuelans approval of the amendments to the Magna Carta.

“Vamos a estar el día martes a las 8:00 AM en la Asamblea Nacional para esperar a Yon Goicoechea y a toda esta gente de la contrarrevolución a invitarlos a debatir acerca de cuál creen ellos que es su modelo de país”. "It will be on Tuesday at 8:00 AM in the National Assembly to wait for Yon Goicoechea and the entire people of this counterrevolution to invite them to discuss what they believe is their model country."

Solórzano aseguró que los jóvenes oficialistas garantizarán que la marcha opositora no sea blanco de acciones violentas como las ocurridas en el Teatro Teresa Carreño el lunes pasado. Solorzano said that young oficialistas ensure that the march is not a target of opposing violent actions such as those occurring in the Teresa Carreno Theater last Monday.

“Nosotros somos enemigos de la violencia y pregoneros de la paz y del amor (…) Vamos a estar allí y estarán los cuerpos de seguridad garantizando la seguridad de todos los ciudadanos”, dijo. "We are opposed to violence and town criers of peace and love (…) We will be there and will be the security forces to ensure the security of all citizens," he said.

where the Bolivarian students turn to the structures of the community. This is a smart move on their part and holding a forum will give troublemakers no excuse now for their violence.
