Bush: Clinton Understands White House Pressure

Exclusive Interview Details President's Thoughts on 2008 Race, Last Year in Office

In an exclusive interview with Charlie Gibson airing Tuesday on World News, President Bush and first lady Laura Bush said that Sen. Hillary Clinton's experience as first lady has prepared her to handle the "pressure" of a presidential race and the White House.

"No question, there is no question that Sen. Clinton understands pressure better than any of the candidates, you know, in the race," the president told ABC News' Charlie Gibson Tuesday afternoon at the presidential retreat at Camp David.

The president emphasized, "I do believe our candidate will beat her, if she happens to be the nominee," although he refused to speculate on the Republican presidential field, calling it a "wide-open" race.

Bush, whose father was defeated for re-election by Bill Clinton in 1992, called the former first lady a "very formidable candidate," saying repeatedly that she and the former president "understand the klieg lights."

5. Isn't that what Bill was saying when he kept supporting Bush from 2001-2006
on his decisions on terrorism and Iraq war? Bill was very firm supporting Bush on these two major issues because he said he understood what he was going through and why he made those decisions.

And now it's the Bushboy's turn to return the favor.

20. Gee, between Bush, Clinton(s) and Osama Bin Laden, they show quite impressive teamwork
all the while pretending to be "enemies" .. quite fascinating.

8. He likes Scalia and Thomas
She likes Breyer and Ginsberg. Is that enough of a difference for you? It should be.

12. Do you think Hillary will disappoint when
it comes to Supreme picks - the next president is likely to get 3 vacancies to fill. Do you think she would pick the same as Rudy or any of the other pubs? I certainly don't and think it's way too important an issue to have a hissy fit over.

13. People like olddad spouted the Gore=Bush lie in 2000, and will serve up more of the same in 2008
Facts don't have anything to do with it.

And FWIW, Clinton is at the bottom of my 08 list.

14. No, people like Old dad voted for Gore and knew that Bush was a ....
a fascist. I didn't expect election to be rigged, but I knew democracy was over when the Supreme Court chose Bush. I also never bought the 911 lie from day one. And if Hillary weren't owed and operated by the same people, they wouldn't be donating heavily to her campaign

15. Then don't have a hissy fit.
If you think the facsists that run this government are going to leave the next presidency up to chance. Think again.

9. I knew it... GW says something somewhat positive ( and true)
and that means to some folks here that she is in love with the guy and is a closet Republican.
Truth is, she probably hates his guts just like the posters here on DU.

18. yeha...
only Hillary knows how to be president. :eyes:

Meanwhile, she's not the candidate proposing single-payer universal healthcare, or to get us out of Iraq immediately, or to restore the Constitution, or address energy issues concretely.

But...she's the only one that can understand what it means to be President. :sarcasm:

interview the idiot after Bush looked like he was going to deck Gibson during the Kerry/Bush debates?
