Huckabee: America enslaved to Saudi oil
Source: Yahoo News

Consumers are financing both sides in the war on terror because of the actions of U.S. ally Saudi Arabia, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Sunday.

The former Arkansas governor made the comments following what he suggested was a muted response by the Bush administration to a Saudi court's sentence of six months in jail and 200 lashes for a woman who was gang raped.

"The United States has been far too involved in sort of looking the other way, not only at the atrocities of human rights and violation of women," Huckabee said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"Every time we put our credit card in the gas pump, we're paying so that the Saudis get rich — filthy, obscenely rich, and that money then ends up going to funding madrassas," schools "that train the terrorists," said Huckabee. "America has allowed itself to become enslaved to Saudi oil. It's absurd. It's embarrassing."

Huckabee said "I would make the United States energy independent within 10 years and tell the Saudis they can keep their oil just like they can keep their sand, that we won't need either one of them."

Good for Huckabee - nice to hear a Repub voice this. Now he needs to smack the Republican party for ignoring this for the last several decades and for embracing the Saudis at every turn.

1. Even a broken clock is right two times a day...
Glad he brought it up, though. HIS party is most responsible for it, though.

7. Mainstream Dems haven't done enough about this either
... I don't recall the Clinton administration doing much about this when they were in power. There's a lot of blame to be spread around.

11. Yeah but Clinton had to live with Repukes in majority for 6
of his 8 years in office. Hard to take an initiative when you have that bunch of deniers in charge. Then you have Dems like Dingell who catered to the American automakers and allowed them to basically commit suicide by fighting mileage standards.

14. Not many recent presidents have been demanding that
auto standards be revised. There could have been suggestions to put huge taxes on SUVs and other guzzlers to discourage their use, etc.

6. Huckabee is speaking the truth on this issue. That's why his campaign is not raising any real money.
I take him at his word when he says he's a Main Street conservative, but you need Wall Street money to win elections.

And don't think for a minute the two of them are above running on the same ticket.

13. I think a winning GOP ticket has to have Huckabee on it
Everybody else has lost the RR's trust at this point. Though my reading of the Republican mind is to expect a gender/race spoiler if we nominate Clinton or Obama. Liddy Dole on the one hand, somebody besides Alan Keyes on the other.

16. yes BUT, what is his point?
too many Republicans say the same thing about Saudi oil and then declare that we have to drill in ANWR and off our coasts and totally disregard the need for conservation. I don't know if Huckabee is one of those folks or not, just cautioning DUers to not assume a candidate has the same views as them when they may or may not.

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_ep00_im0_mbbl_m.htm

If you visit this government link, you will see that less than 10% of our oil imports are from Saudi Arabia.

Riiiight, Huck. Way to misdirect there.

Our gas money also goes to enrich people like our current Prez and Veep, and helped send them to schools that train corporate fascists.

22. He doesn't say HOW we would become energy independant though
is he like so many repugs, who seem to believe that if we just set up enough oil derricks in each and every state we'll have all that we need? Or would he be sensible and invest in renewables?
