Harman says she warned CIA not to destroy tapes
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 06:47 PM by maddezmom
Source: Daily Breeze

Rep. Jane Harman said Friday that she warned the CIA not to destroy videotapes of its interrogations of terror suspects, and defended herself from critics who said she should have done more prevent their destruction.

CIA Director Michael V. Hayden disclosed Thursday night that congressional leaders, including Harman, had been informed of the agency’s plan to destroy those tapes several years ago.

Hayden was defending his agency from a New York Times report that the tapes had been destroyed in 2005.

In an interview Friday, Harman said that after the briefing in 2003, she sent a letter to the CIA warning the agency not to destroy the tapes.

“I told the CIA that destroying any tapes of interrogations was a bad idea,” Harman said. “I gave the best advice I could, and obviously my advice was not heeded.”

what the hell else did she warn them about?

on edit just found this:

"The news that the tapes were destroyed was extremely disturbing to me and the CIA's description of notifying Congress is inconsistent with our records. As we learn more, it is only raising new questions and concerns," Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said Friday.

"We do not know if there was intent to obstruct justice, an attempt to prevent congressional scrutiny, or whether they were simply destroyed out of concern they could be leaked — whatever the intent, we must get to the bottom of it. This is a very serious matter with very serious consequences," he added.

Rockefeller said the committee hasn't found records showing they were told about the existence of the tapes, or their plans to destroy them. He said he knew about about the tapes himself, but doesn't remember being told about plans to destroy them either.

3. If Ms. Harman were representative of the GOP...
...I might vote Republican.

OK, not really. But she's remarkable.

4. ATTENTION:
"........CIA Director Michael V. Hayden disclosed Thursday night that congressional leaders, including Harman, had been informed of the agency’s plan to destroy those tapes SEVERAL YEARS AGO......"

Is it my imagination, or were REPUBLICANS in charge of Congress "several years ago"? Just curious..........

Yeah, that's it, BLAME THE DEMS, even though their opinion on the matter would have been completely disregarded at the time. I have no doubt whatsoever that the Congressional leadership at the time said GO RIGHT AHEAD AND DESTROY THEM, RIGHT AWAY.

7. You're right. As I recall, all democrats were regularly excluded from such "meetings."

11. Dems were completely out of the loop for years and not allowed to participate
in anything other than committee hearings and votes, IIRC.

14. We can blame the Dems for not having dragged those responsible...
...before them, using Inherent Contempt. Most of the blame may predate Democratic control, but those in charge now could have launched serious investigations.

5. In 2003 I am sure that the dems were in the minority and even their
fellow reps ( of course I am referring to the lying, thieving pugs) would not let them do anything. I am so sure that the Bushistas would pay one iota of attention to even the most powerful dem, which was actually nobody.

Rockefeller: Actually, I Just Found Out About the Destroyed Torture-Tapes Yesterday
By Spencer Ackerman - December 7, 2007, 4:51PM
Take two! Senate intelligence committee chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) had said yesterday that the CIA told him about its destruction of videotaped interrogations in "November 2006." But oops -- in a new statement just released to the press, he says he spoke too soon. It turns out he knew about the tapes' existence in 2003, but only found out about their destruction yesterday. 9. I just posted on another thread about this................
why is it okay to 'out' Valerie Plame, but okay to destroy tapes, so other agents wouldn't be 'outed'?

why is that?

12. When these government committees meet isn't there a requirement to keep detailed minutes?
I would think this could be very easily verified unless they pull a Cheney and say the American people have no right to know what goes on in these meetings, as he did over the Energy meetings. The court ruled in his favor so maybe they don't even bother with Minutes any more...

15. If anyone is wondering
why HC is slipping in the polls, it's because she is seen as a continuing force for covering up the Bush's crimes. The Demos have little chance of bringing the criminals to justice until the new Demo WH, Congress take over in 2008/9. The Democrats and most Republicans are sick and tired and desperately want change.
