WOONSOCKET, R.I., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- CVS Pharmacy Inc. was fined $226,598 after inspectors found 43 of its stores in the U.S. Northeast changed employee timecards and violated child labor laws.

The Woonsocket, R.I., chain agreed to pay $38,151 in back wages to 51 employees whose timecards managers had changed, the U.S. Labor Department said.

The payments followed a Labor Department investigation that revealed violations of the wage and youth employment provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, the department said.

The department investigated 63 company stores because it previously found violations at some CVS pharmacies, it said.

1. A local childcare director was changing the timecards of employees....
They were mostly immigrants. My wife was among them (russian).

When I confronted the director (I called her on her illegal timecard changes and other violations of labor laws), she called the police on me. They made me leave and I wasn't allowed back.

It took three years, but after helping several of the immigrant women organize a legal challenge, and many setbacks, this director was finally fired. Sadly, nothing happened to the regional director who knew this shit was going on but did nothing to stop it. I don't know, but my gut tells me the only reason the director was finally let go was because there was growing pressure on corporate, and they didn't want to risk widespread labor violations discovered and made public.

You can't trust these people. I'm glad CVS got nailed. Every one of the managers involved should be fired, not 'retrained.'

2. I'll never set foot in a CVS again.
We had a lovely neighborhood grocery store that had been there over 30 years and was an invaluable resource for the elderly people who live in the area. CVS came in and bought the property out from under the grocery store owner, who even offered to pay $10,000 a month in rent to stay open. They refused. The property has sat empty and boarded up since April. They're just now planning to start tearing the place down for their damn store, which is stupid in the first place because they already have a small store in the same center, but they had to have the property to build a big store directly across the street from a Walgreen's. The city and the neighborhood tried to stop the sale, but it was no use. This is what happens when property owners are locals--they will sell you out every time.

I cuss them out every time I have to go to the grocery store--damn bastards. I hope they all rot in hell.
