Paul keeps white supremacist donation

By BRIAN SKOLOFF, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 44 minutes ago

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has received a $500 campaign donation from a white supremacist, and the Texas congressman doesn't plan to return it, an aide said Wednesday.

Don Black, of West Palm Beach, recently made the donation, according to campaign filings. He runs a Web site called Stormfront with the motto, "White Pride World Wide." The site welcomes postings to the "Stormfront White Nationalist Community."

"Dr. Paul stands for freedom, peace, prosperity and inalienable rights. If someone with small ideologies happens to contribute money to Ron, thinking he can influence Ron in any way, he's wasted his money," Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said. "Ron is going to take the money and try to spread the message of freedom."

"And that's $500 less that this guy has to do whatever it is that he does," Benton added.

I think Ron Paul is out of his mind to keep that money. It's absolutely disgusting on his part.

2. I think this country should adopt a policy of forced renaming.
Anyone who self-identifies as a white supremacist or takes money from white supremacists should have their last name changed to Hitler.

Let's see how Ron Hitler does among independents then.

15. yeah, I agree
I think it's obvious Ron doesn't believe in that white supremacists thinkng...but if he voluntarily wants to give away his money, great! less money for him to run a website, print pamphlets, or do whatever white supremacists are doing.

6. Ok, one more time, DUers: Ron Paul IS a racist.
His ad in the Boulder Weekly had code words that made it pretty damn clear that he is a racist. This was months ago.

But at his core Ron Paul will still work to defend the privileges of rich old white men. Too bad he is so good at keeping his white robe in the back of the closet.

18. You don't need a decoder ring
You don't need a decoder ring; simply read the article, apply some common sense and presto-- you'll read the screed of a racist.

would YOU take $500 from a white supremacist? I would, and I'd turn it around and give it to the United Negro College Fund or something.

If a KKK member gave you money, is it more moral to keep it for yourself, or give it BACK so they can use it for their needs? Isn't that a bit like just giving the KKK $500?

I do see Paul's point in all of this.

I don't agree with Paul's politics, but I don't think the $500 is going to 'buy' him. His keeping the money jibes with his beliefs on rights and freedom of speech. I'm sure if the Gay Pagan Committee for Stalinism (or whomever) donated $500 to Paul, he'd keep that, too.

21. Paul wasn't accepting *charity*.
I wouldn't take $500 from the KKK to promote *myself*, and I wouldn't expect to be taken as anything other than a racist (or apologist for same) if I did. I would at least expect to have the wisdom to recognize how doing so would appear.

And if I was using the money to run for office, I would be saying, "this is part of what my campaign stands for." No, a candidate can't be expected to scrutinize every dollar coming in, but that Paul knows--and doesn't seem to care--bodes ill for him as a serious presidential candidate. This shows epically poor judgment; * bad, even.

24. The ideology may be White Supremacist.
But the money is pure green. I'd keep it too, and make it clear to the donor that it won't be used for the purpose he intended.

His beliefs about black and Jewish people are well-known, even though he tries to keep quiet about them.

27. I'm far more concerned...
...about the tens of thousands Clinton is receiving from the military-industrial and oil interests than Paul not giving back $500 from some racist freak.

If accepting a gift says something about the recipient, then what should we think about Hillary?

But, there is some definite hypocrisy with this line of reasoning. Who is Hillary selling out to for victory? And what will is cost us?

29. Symbolism is important
Taking money from a white supremacist group has pretty clear symbolism. Keeping it after the matter has become public has even more symbolic impact.
