Independent group targets Huckabee opponents with SC push polling

COLUMBIA, S.C. - An independent political group plans to make phone calls to 1 million households in South Carolina using an automated system that disparages Republican presidential Mike Huckabee's opponents despite a state law that says such practices are illegal in this early voting state.

Common Sense Issues, a Colorado-based organization, does not have a direct connection to the former Arkansas governor, the group's executive director, Patrick Davis, said Friday. However, the nonprofit group is financed and run by Huckabee supporters.

Davis said the calls to South Carolina, which began last weekend, are legal under federal law and constitutionally protected free speech.

"We are sending those calls into South Carolina from outside the state," Davis said. "The federal law is the law that we're riding on."

1. Nice end run around the law there.
I'm sure God probably said to go ahead with it.

2. I don't believe we really want to close down the various 501 and 527 orgs out there.
In Columbus a 501 c costs about $750 to set up. That is really close to personal speech. If I get a 501 c, I can then try to put something on the Statehouse or City Hall lawn.
Common Sense Issues is a 501(c)(4) social welfare, grassroots lobbying organization

4. Oh, but the Huckster has NO TIES to these people.....
pure as the driven snow is the Huckster. :eyes: There's no connection and he has absolutely NO control over these despicable actions. :sarcasm:

This way the Huckster has plausible deniability when he reaches the "pearly gates". There's a myriad of loopholes for "true christians" to keep their balance sheets in order, and they use every one available.

Amazing that the christian extremists consider this "kosher". ;) I guess anything is fair game in their quest to establish a theocracy in our country.

5. Seems as if they've scrubbed the story already....
"You have followed a link to a page which no longer exists on the server".

Wouldn't want people to find out the truth now, would we? :eyes: See, the story no longer exists! It can't be true. There's nothing to see here, move along now, christian soldiers.
