1. Thanks!
I haven't been able to get re-connected to the stream, so I was wondering how it came out.

Personally, my favorite among the runner's up was 'In My Country'.

Child's Pay was good too, but I just liked the other one better.

3. In My Country...
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 10:42 PM by w13rd0
...was my #2 after Child's Pay. But it may have been a bit "much" for the venue it will be played in. I'd love to see it get some airtime as well though...

44. the ad doesn't work
in fact, if aired, it would backfire! It has nothing to do with my expansive and dazzling social life. It has to do "reaching" an undecided voter. While it pleases many here at DU, I presume most DUers have made up their mind about Bush. Now show it to non-political voters, any many will be glad to government is keeping an eye on angry, obviously MIddle-Eastern/Central Asian males who are mad at America. The ad sucks; don't take it personally.

50. Ok now that I addressed your immature and racist posts
Most Americans I know cherish their civil rights. They feel it is part of their patriotic duty. Maybe that kind of thing does not resonate with you but that is not a total shock after reading your previous post. Most people don't give a second thought to people who express racists opinions either so don't take it personally.›

4. This is a really good one
People in this country have to be reminded that the deeds of the present will create the future. This is a very clear, concise message of what is happening and what it will lead to.

31. Problem is, if people gave a damn about their
children's future, they would insist on well funded schools and stop destroying the environment. I don't think "Child's play" will have that much of an impact on the average American voter; they'll think "hey, as long as it's not MY dime, who gives a sh*t"-at least that seems to be the prevailing attitude these days.

There were a fair number that gave several exampes in a single ad of Bush's* terrible impact on so many facets of our lives. I hope they'll find a way to air a few more of them.

I liked that one best,no doubt..it was funny and made a great point.. but the one that won was pretty good too. Which ones won in the funniest category? I liked 'Yeeha' for animation and 'Bring it on' for the youth ad.

15. My favorite is "What are we teaching our children?"...
... but "Child's Pay" is one of my favorites too. I do so hope that Move On is going to run more of these ads than just the one that won the contest. There are SO many good ones there that just cry out to be introduced into the collective consciousness of the American electorate. I'm hoping that soon we'll start seeing several of these ads -- the top five, let's say -- on TV all the time. Not just the winner. And keep up the good work, MoveOn.org.

I thought that Bush Knew was the most info in the shortest time frame, it also had a contemporary feel. Second was What Are we Teaching our Children. I think that Child's Pay might be seen as cutesy and not really critical, though I liked it too.

22. USA Today coverage: (story link)
Ad showing kids laboring to pay off deficit wins MoveOn contest

By Beth Fouhy, Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Images of children toiling on a grocery line and in a tire factory coupled with a simple line of text — "Guess who's going to pay off President Bush's $1 trillion deficit?" — paid off for 38-year old Charlie Fisher of Denver, Colorado.

24. This was the right choice, folks
It has a very simple message and it irrefutably combats the impression a great majority of Americans entertain: that the Republicans are fiscally conservative. This impression is- as we all know- completely false, but I think it is a great barrier to a good deal of Americans pulling that D lever.

The rest of them were great ads, but I think they were more targetted towards persons already firmly committed to ousting Bush, rather than the swing voters. And some of them tried to cram in too much information in too short a span (Let's not forget the average American attention span is scarcely above that of a housefly).

25. Not a good choice
It's OK, but not the hardest hitting, funniest, or even the most memorable of the bunch. Somehow, I don't think this election is going to be won by half-measures...

The major problem is it's just not motivating; it's kind of a boo-hoo ad, laced with resignation. And there is an intrinsic problem with identification, too. Those are shots of kids doing the jobs that gazillions of Americans do every day, and which their kids will be doing in just a few years' time, anyway. So there's a kind of built-in "chip off the old block/ain't that cute" riff that the ad has to overcome just to get its point across. The juxtaposition of kids in crappy adult jobs isn't really that jarring, either, given that kids are working in McDonalds from the age of 13 or 14 -- not to mention the widely-disseminated images of the overseas child labor that Americans contentedly depend upon for their cheap-o Wal-Mart goods.

Admittedly, many of my favorites in the contest were preaching to the choir. But if the cute kid approach was going to win, I'd have chosen the school kids at the microphone: more zing, more wit.

46. Agreed, this was the least powerful of the bunch...
Let's face it... swing voters and neo-republicans vote for themselves... they really do not care about children. It is too easy for them to remain detached and also to intellectualize a response. For example, yes the kids will pay... but they will be slogging as adults... not children when the time comes. Also, repub-lites are likely to believe that some magical turnaround can change the deficit. And most of them think, "So much the better, after all it won't be MY kids..." Anything which doesn't touch them directly is inconsequential.

Any ad made that addresses their own pocketbooks is going to touch home the easiest. "Gone in 30 seconds" was not the funniest, nor the most beautiful.... but I sure thought it was the one that touched these people's mentality.

Granted "Child's play" was really, really well made. I liked it... but it is way too subtle for your average voter to care... you could almost miss it if you weren't paying attention.

I wish they could air them all... dig deep Soros!

Poor choice, I thought.

We lost but it was cool to be chosen and the event was a lot of fun. I met Al Franken and some other celebs and got really wasted.

I was very impressed with most of the ads. The top two were great I thought. I was also very impressed with the way the winner handled himself. He was very humble. Seemed like a very nice and classy guy.l
