Name recognition? Favorability rating?
Last I heard the Rep candidate had about 5 mil to Erskine's 2.5 mil as far as finances go.

Good news indeed, but 45% is about what we carried in 2002. Erskine has statewide name recognition and Richard Burr has never run a statewide campaign. I imagine that the percentage for Richard Burr is pretty much the same as the Republican base. Burr has amassed quite a campaign warchest, thanks to the Bush and Cheney money machine. There is about a 10-15% undecided factor and Burr is positioning himself as a moderate to get those votes. A moderate with a lot of money to spend painting himself as a moderate.
Bowles is doing quite well, thank you, raising money. Burr got a good headstart because Edwards took his time announcing that he would not run again for the Senate.
Senate races in NC are always, always close. Jesse Helms never won by a very large margin, and I don't think that a statewide candidate with Jesse Helms' degree of conservatism could win today. This will be a close race. We can't take any vote for granted, and we have to make sure that our base voters get to the polls.

You are correct,we have so many republicans that vote republican because daddy did. But this state has depressed labor market, with the loss of so many white collar jobs, blue collar fighting in Iraq, and a number of Yankee transplants... I think this state will go into the democrat column in the Senate and Presidential races.
Some from the state try to paint John Edwards as a do nothing for the state Senator, when in fact Edwards, has visited all or almost all counties in North Carolina. I never hear a democrat complain about Senator Edwards neglecting North Carolina..just republicans, who are afraid he will make it as president.
I think Bowles will carry the state, but as you said we will have to work hard and take nothing for granted.
