Fred Thompson may drop out
Source: Politico

DES MOINES, Iowa – Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday’s Iowa caucus.

Thompson’s campaign, which last spring and summer was generating fevered anticipation in the media and with some Republican activists, has never ignited nationally, and there are no signs of a late spark happening here in Iowa, where even a third-place finish is far from assured.

This reality—combined with a fundraising drought—left well-connected friends and advisers of Thompson Wednesday evening predicting that he will pull the plug on hype and hope before the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primary.

Thompson’s departure could shake up the race more than his continued presence. Friends and advisers said they have long considered it likely that if the lobbyist-actor is forced from the race he would endorse John McCain his former Senate colleague who lately has been staging a political revival in New Hampshire.

53. Uhhhh, Could you please repeat the question?....
What will Jackie and Dunlap do on Red State Update without that hilarious drawing of the dozey Fred Thompson behind them? I love that Fred Thompson is a representative of the Republican Party... dull, stupid, slow, a bit hideous to look at, and so far out of touch with the rest of the world that he still thinks MC Hammer is the black music icon for the "darkies" of the world.

I've had cold sticky two day old oatmeal warmer and more interesting than this guy. With the writers strike it's a good thing the Republican party has their bevy of clowns to keep the comedy rolling or I'd be downright bored. I have a little nasty fantasy of all the religious wingnut Christian Rebug candidate wannabes all getting down to their skivvies, (Mitts would be truly disgusting because I've seen those mormon jammies and they're SKANKY and sloppy) and get into a ring and duke it out in a tag team sort of fest, smacking each other with the holy righteous chairs of Jesus and spitting scripture, flinging the feces of bigotted doctrine and just getting down and dirty. Boy Howdy, that would make a fun show.

8. Biggest political disappointment of the year. Everyone thought

23. I know its been stated in many different forms but....
Thompson's campaign was the biggest fucking joke of the 2008 cycle. How was one able to take him seriously when he thought there was still a Soviet Union. Your ship sailed a long time ago Freddy. All you're doing now is struggling to stay afloat. You're poll ratings were lower than your Law and Order gig.

He looks tired, old, and grouchy. He speaks without energy and has no message. He has no major accomplishments outside of show business. He is known to be lazy. Richard Nixon called him "dumb as hell."

How exactly was this piece of nothing supposed to save the R's?

Law & Order premiered last night, and was a vast improvement over the old L&O when Thompson was on board. Many a critic noted that he was a factor in the declining ratings of the show, and no tears were shed on his departure.

54. The real story behind his chucking it
He never really wanted to do it. Jeri was behind it; she wanted to be first bimbo. She insisted he run; she was the campaign manager. Then she learned that when you marry an old fart for fame and fortune, there are tradeoffs. If you and he keep a low profile, then you can get a little on the side and his meager efforts every couple of months are adequate. But when he is in the public eye you can't fool around AND if you are pushing him to do shit he doesn't want to, he has no energy left over, so you are SOL. She decided that she wasn't getting good enough "vibes" about his chances.
