'MacKay bows out' - Cdn United Right leadership bid - Globe and Mail

Peter MacKay will not try to lead the new Conservative Party that he helped form, leaving his future in politics uncertain.

The former leader of the now-defunct federal Progressive Conservative Party said Tuesday that he would not try to assume the leadership of the nascent Conservative Party of Canada, formed from the ashes of the Tories and the Canadian Alliance.

"It is the most difficult decision I have ever made in my professional career," he told reporters in Ottawa. "My frank assessment is that this is not my time. ... There was a feeling in my gut."

To be expected, as he had no hope of winning.
