(Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky) Anderson calls for inquiry of Bush
Source: AP

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson used his last full day in office to submit a letter that calls on the House Judiciary Committee to investigate the Bush administration for abuses of power.

The letter was signed by 18 political and cultural figures. It asks House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers of Michigan to hold hearings on alleged violations of the law under President Bush.

The letter says those violations include kidnapping and torture, warrantless wiretapping, a war of aggression against Iraq and disseminating false propaganda to deceive the American people.

1. Good man, deserves more national attention.

Democrat, though the office itself is nonpartisan.

2. I didn't realize he was leaving office
I see there's been an election and a guy named Becker is coming into office. http://origin.sltrib.com/slc/ci_7873518

According to the election results, I take it Rocky didn't run for re-election? http://www.clerk.slco.org/results/public/

What do people know about this Becker guy? How come Rocky didn't run again?

Sure hope he remains in public service. I'd like to see him run for higher office soon.

3. I may be wrong, but I think he was term-limited
Seems strange for a mayor to have term limits.... though it would sure be good if they did in places like Chicago. There was a really good article about him/interview in The Nation a few years back that gave me an awful lot of respect for the man. The sad thing is that he probably couldn't get elected to the senate from Utah - maybe not even the house.... and who knows if he'd want that. Still, his voice and actions are valuable, and I hope he stays on our radar.

10. I'm from Salt Lake Ralph Becker is said to be more progressive than Rocky Anderson.
Believe it or not. He won in a landslide over the Republican candidate who adopted a liberal message, even though he wasn't really liberal at all.

Rocky could have run for a third term, but decided to spend the rest of his life on global warming.

He leaves office tomorrow. But Ralph Becker will continue building a progressive Salt Lake, no doubt about it.
