"Say it ain't so, John!

The California Majority Report reports that Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA), one of the long-time subjects of the Jack Abramoff investigation, "will announce that he will not seek re-election." That could come as soon as this week, reports John Bresnahan of The Politico. Back in September, Doolittle proclaimed "I am running again. Period."

5. This is big because it's a swing district
When a Republican retires from a safe Republican seat, it's good for a malicious cackle or two, but it doesn't really change matters.

Doolittle, however, won in 2006 by only 49% to 46%. This is a great opportunity for a Democratic pickup. If Doolittle does get out, it's an open seat with no one having the advantage of incumbency (and the 2006 Democratic candidate, Charlie Brown, has announced he's running again, and should have some name recognition from last time). On the other hand, if Doolittle stays in, he's vulnerable on his Abramoff ties.

19. This is very bad news for Dems
Doolittle represents the most Republican district in the state if you consider Presidential voting. Brown almost won because of distaste for Doolittle and because Brown is a great candidate. Most think he'll have a tougher time winning against a different Republican candidate. Still, I think Brown may win this.

He had very little help from the state party and still managed to get very close to Do Little but Steal.

18. I'm in Calaveras County
and was disappointed but not surprsied that he won last time. Browm made it close, and the Sac Bee's coverage was lame--just enough to credibly claim that they didn't black out Doolittle's problems. Not this time baby!

21. NOT SO FAST! According to
The local Nevada County paper and constant Doolittle Fluffers..

Doolittle will run again, spokesman says as rumblings mount

Congressman John T. Doolittle, R-Roseville, will run for re-election this year, contrary to reports issued today in online media, a Granite Bay spokesman said this afternoon.

“In the last conversation I had with the congressman, he is running,” said spokesman David Plag.

In The California Majority Report, an online political magazine, writer Steven Maviglio reports Doolittle “will announce that he will not seek re-election, paving the way for former State Sen. Rico Oller for the 4th District Congressional seat.”

Doolittle has been under scrutiny regarding his links to jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff. FBI agents in Apriil 2007 seized computers and documents from the office of Doolittle’s wife, Julie Doolittle, as part of their investigation.

28. Doolittle and his office have not confirmed this yet.
Rumors abound, but they still say he is running. I live in the district and want him to stay in the race so Charlie Brown can annihilate him.
