BAGHDAD (AFP) — Three US soldiers were killed when they were attacked with small arms fire while conducting operations in northern Iraq, the American military announced on Wednesday.

Two other soldiers were wounded in the attack, which occurred in Salaheddin province on Tuesday, a military statement said.

US commanders announced on Tuesday the launch of a joint US-Iraqi assault against Al-Qaeda in Iraq, codenamed Operation Phantom Phoenix.

The location of the operation was not identified, but US commanders say Al-Qaeda fighters have shifted to northern Iraq, especially Diyala, Salaheddin and Nineveh provinces, after being chased out of Baghdad by a "surge" of American forces.

8. more non-information from the MSP
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 01:36 PM by gmpierce
The non-story, if I have the right incident, is that a group of "coallition" troops was kicking a pregnant Iraqi woman. Supposedly one of the Iraqi troops asked them to stop, and was told that "we can do whatever we want". After that he got his weapon and fired on them.

What's in question is: who is lying, the Iraqi or the US troops. The military is busy investigating and saying that nothing happened. Some of the Iraqi's have declared the shooter a national hero.

And we are not even being informed of anything more than the fact that some of our guys got shot.
