Cognizant, Infosys eye IT deal from Wal-Mart
Source: The Ecoomic Times/India

12 Jan, 2008, 2153 hrs IST

BANGALORE: The world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, is likely to increase its IT outsourcing activity in India. Though, the likely contours of its outsourcing activity is not known, it is understood that Infosys and Cognizant are in the race for a large outsourcing deal. An email sent to Wal-Mart remained unanswered.

Infosys reportedly has been engaged by Wal-Mart to define the business and technology strategy for its global e-commerce business. According to sources, Wal-Mart is likely to place an outsourcing order in the range of a billion dollar plus and this may have India based players like Infosys and Cognizant in the fray.

At the same time, Wal-Mart is engaged with numerous Indian players for sourcing both IT services and solutions. Some of its requirements are based on human resources while others are for technology solutions.

People in the know, however, said it is very unlikely that Wal-Mart could go in for a huge outsourcing deal given its large inhouse IT systems with proprietary technology. Sources said that there is also a possibility of Wal-Mart also setting up its own captive centre, as part of its IT expansion plan in India.

6. Can't avoid it ...

If you thought avoiding Wal-Mart was hard, avoiding outsourced IT work is impossible. And ... due to the inherent difficulty of putting tariffs and relatively small pieces of code, it probably always will be.
