China Down to 8 Day Supply of Coal for Power
Source: BBC

China in power shortage warning

(China generates more than half its electricity from coal)
China says it is facing serious power shortages as severe winter weather continues to cause unusually high demand for electricity.

Thirteen regions have already started to ration power supplies, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

It said coal reserves were down to emergency levels and stockpiles were only high enough to generate power for the whole country for eight days.

China's economic boom has led to surging demand for electricity.

The coal industry has struggled to keep up, partly because of the government's campaign to close many small mines on safety grounds.

14. It is not, statistically speaking, a big problem
Yes birds die, but there isn't a lot of evidence that it happens in enough numbers to be as bad as any of the other, more serious threats to bird populations (habitat loss, pesticides, etc).

23. CATS! I have read that free roaming domestic cats kill
an estimated 40 million birds every year in the US alone! Keep your cat indoors, it will live a much longer, healthier life and so will the birds.

36. actually closer to 400 million
florida alone some 68 million

“There are some 15 million cats in Florida which spend all or part of their time outside preying on wildlife,” Hatley said. “It is estimated that cats kill as many as 271 million small mammals and 68 million birds each year in Florida, many of these members of threatened and endangered species.”

http://news.ufl.edu/2003/05/01/feralcat/

in wisconsin

Some experts estimate that 2 million wild cats roam Wisconsin, and the state says studies show feral cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds a year.

24. In addition to natural predators such as cats, you have to understand
that a large portion of them die from cars/trucks hitting them too and I am not seeing anybody get upset about that to say to get rid of the cars/trucks until they make the improvements for birds. Even if we eliminated the cars/trucks and predators like cats, a great number of them die from stupidity as they fly headon into trees, buildings, and whatever all of the time. That bird killing thing was just an excuse arguement by somebody that doesn't like wind generators and are totally hypocritic as for not calling for the ban of all vehicles. Hey, what about the planes as they kill many birds and some of those birds have caused the plane's engines to fail and killed all aboard? People need to think more thoroughly.
As to sending wind generators there, it's not necessary as they have just as much industrial ability as we do to make them. They are also making solar pv panels for export. Maybe they need to use them rather than just go for the money from exporting.

A long-awaited federal report on the environmental impact of wind power suggests birds have far more to fear from high buildings, power lines and cats than they do from the swirling blades of wind generators at Altamont Pass and elsewhere.

5. They're in desperate need of alternate energy sources
They're destroying their country and taking the world down right along with it. What their reliance on coal is doing to the environment and the health of their people is criminal. And they need to accept that their hydroelectric plans for Three Gorges Dam are also an ecological disaster. Yet they are still not close to meeting the growing electric needs of their country.

Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 03:41 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
I think they're shooting for 36 million kilowatts by 2020 or so.

Considering how responsible they've been with their hydro and coal electricity production, I can't say this plan makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

the manufacturing plants that make all the crap they ship to the US. American consumers would be hard pressed to find many products on our shelves, but it would be a boon for US made goods.
Call me an optimist, looking at the bright side of an otherwise dangerous situation for the Chinese population.

Despite all of the venom directed at them in this forum on a regular basis, they've provided us with unbelievably cheap labor for a very long time. Their citizens don't deserve to run short on power in the middle of a harsh winter.

28. No, coal is not the answer.
Unless we export coal with a requirement that recapture of CO2 is employed like Edwards supports and which Obama and Clinton do not. We are hosed if China stays with coal.

I agree with MADem. Wind is one of the answers. Export wind turbine technology to them. We have the tech.

22. What the hell are you talking about? "They've provided us with unbelievably cheap labor"...?
Who is "us"? They sure as hell haven't provided ME with cheap labor...in fact, they've provided ME with a bunch of cheap products that I wouldn't buy at a yard sale for a penny, and which end up in the landfills within a week or two, while they've sucked ALL the money out of our economy base...which is our OWN labor force.

The Chinese "people" need to overthrow their government, just like we do. The vampires that are running things are sucking the life out of the people and the environment faster than we can take our next breath.

30. I'm afraid they've just been responding to the requests made of them by our own business owners.
And those businesspeople were responding to the demands of American consumers, who would only buy the cheapest electronics, toys, and clothing. It's a vicious cycle, and you can't blame it entirely on the Chinese government or any other particular entity. Everybody's trying to get over, and everybody wants cheap goods... we're living out the result of our previous and current behavior, and we are the ones to blame.

33. In the fog, therein lies the truth (Idunno who said it) BUT
.
.
.

your statement

"The Chinese "people" need to overthrow their government, just like we do."

JUST LIKE WE DO

Exactly

Y'all need a Revolution down there

BUT

ain't gonna happen

Not enough coordination between all the "groups"

Presidential wise, John Kennedy was the most effective.

So the PNACers whacked him

Carter was a good man, but couldn't get the enthusiasm of the electorate.

Martin Luther King was a great man - and inspired many

so the PNACers killed HIM too.

Y'all NEED to overthrow, AND change your government's way of operating

But I can't see it happening in the next decade or so.

All three of your major Candidates for the Democratic Party fail to give me great hope.

I have a suggestion for a President who would really shake things up in a positive way methinks.

George Carlin!

Back to the point,

The Chinese "people" have nary a chance to overthrow their government.

The United States of America citizens CAN DO IT.

And with World support.

USA first.

29. Not a surprise if they have to import coal
"China is the most interesting case. Growing at 11 percent a year, Beijing just announced that China’s electric generating capacity is now 700 gigawatts. This may not sound impressive, until you learn that they could be surpassing the U.S. in few years and last year they added more capacity than all of Britain’s power stations combined. Seventy-eight percent of this generating capacity comes from coal. To maintain this rate of growth, China, which used to export 100 million tons a year, has become a net-importer of coal with imports increasing 34 percent last year to 51 million tons. World coal prices increased 73 percent in 2007 because of this demand."
