Bush Urges Perseverance on Economy

Bush urges perseverance on economy
By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - President Bush, standing before Congress one last time, urged the nation Monday night to stay confident against gnawing recession fears and be patient with the grinding war in Iraq. "We can all see the economy is slowing," Bush in a blunt acknowledgment of rising food and gas prices, increasing unemployment and turmoil in the housing and financial markets.

"We have unfinished business before us, and the American people expect us to get it done," Bush declared. It was his final State of the Union address and he faced a hostile, Democratic-led Congress eager for the end of his term next January.

With his approval rating near its all-time low, Bush lacked the political clout to push bold ideas and he didn't try. He called on lawmakers to urgently approve a $150 billion plan — worked out with House leaders — to stave off recession through tax rebates for families and incentives for businesses to invest in new plants and equipment.

Senate Democrats want to expand the economic rescue plan with rebates for senior citizens living off Social Security and extensions of unemployment benefits for the jobless. Bush said those changes "would delay it or derail it and neither option is acceptable."

4. What an asshole
He knows the economy is ruined like everything else he touches. He's only waiting for his term to be over with so he can leave this mess for someone else to clean up.

5. He's also not funding Iraq past the end of his term...
...there were several stories on this yesterday, and I posted one of them on DU. The money's going to run out in Iraq right around the time that he leaves the next president holding the bag.

7. "I'm spending all our money in Iraq. Gee, the economy is slowing?"
Um, Yeah, President LameDuckAss!

Let's go to the tote board, shall we?

Unemployment - UP
UNDERemployment - Way UP
Gas Prices - UP
Food Prices - UP
Layoffs - Continuing
Bankruptcies - Continuing
Home Sales - Historically Low
Foreclosures - UP
Wages - Flat
Katrina Recovery - D.O.A.
Uncertainty in the Stock Market - Continuing
Deaths in Iraq - Continuing!
Maimed and damaged men and women coming home from Iraq - Continuing!

So yeah, Rush those checks (of our own money) out to us Fast! But don't bother doing anything for the unemployed and elderly. Spend your remaining time in office trying for a Nobel, trying to burnish your "legacy". :puke:

Has there Been a head of state Less in Touch with Reality oh, since George III or one of those secluded Chinese Emperors?

:banghead:

I'm SO glad I'm not watching the STFU Address.

9. Just more of the same.
I'm fascinated at how he can say he'll veto any new tax, calls for continuation of Iraq, expansion in Afganistan and the general War on Terra, pays lip service to sound-good projects like No Child or actually helping in Sudan, tells Congress to fix Soc Sec., then calls for a balanced budget.

On the plus side, he actually referred to deficits as 'crippling', (Milton Friedman can't believe his ears), and acknowledged a need to reduce greenhouse gases. Yes, I know, he did pull out of Kyoto and destroyed Clinton's surpluses along with any semblance of fiscal responsibility, but if he usually changes course, he admits to nothing.

He is truly painful to listen to.
