COLORADO SPRINGS — A state lawmaker who used a derogatory term Wednesday to describe unmarried teen parents as sexually promiscuous today apologized for using the slur.

“The derogatory term I used was offensive and inappropriate and I would like to apologize for using it," Colorado Springs Republican Rep. Larry Liston said in a statement. “Because of my unfortunate choice of language, the message that I was trying to get across about personal responsibility, and parental responsibility, has been overshadowed.

Wednesday, Liston, appearing at a GOP legislative caucus in Denver, said: “In my parents’ day and age, (unmarried teen parents) were sent away, they were shunned, they were called what they are. There was at least a sense of shame.

“There’s no sense of shame today," Liston continued, according to the The Gazette of Colorado Springs. "Society condones it. ... I think it’s wrong. They’re sluts. And I don’t mean just the women. I mean the men, too.”

I always thought that a teenage girl who willingly got pregnant, and the boy who got her pregnant, were idiots. Even if "accidents happened," they were often stupid for not taking appropriate steps. And possibly for having sex out of boredom.

Disclaimer: I'm someone who didn't have sex until he was 22, and pretty damn infrequently after that, since I'm a repulsive hunk of humanoid. But even given that, I've seen people who had sex in remarkably stupid circumstances...for the wrong reasons, turning off their minds, letting passion overrule common sense, all of that. And reaping the whirlwind.

So, I will always think of these people as schmucks. Males and females alike.

ginbarn and I drove through it by accident one day, taking a winding road that promised to dump us out on the state highway, but there were a lot of religious organizations and charities located on this rural road.

And then we saw it. Tucked away under a clump of trees, about 200 feet behind a gate, was a religious home for unwed mothers. This was one of those places to which unwed teenage mothers were "sent away."

No matter how supportive the administrators at the group home might be, no matter how much encouragement they might give those teenage girls, they will never be the parents of those girls. And how many of them will ever feel that they'll ever be truly welcome back home again?
