ABC NewsABC News' Kevin Chupka reports: Conservative luminary, and former Mitt Romney supporter Paul Weyrich is switching his allegiance to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
During a speech in Virginia Beach, Monday, Huckabee mentioned the endorsement and told the audience gathered that he used to listen to Weyrich's speeches on cassette in the early 80s.
In an availability with reporters, immediately following the speech, Huckabee gave some insight into the conversation he had with Weyrich: "(He) indicated to me that he felt like I was the one guy that was left, that was a true conservative, that really believed things that mattered to a lot of conservatives, and involved everything from strong national defense, to immigration, to tax policy, the life question -- there were many different reasons."
Weyrich is co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that deals with a wide range of both domestic and foreign affairs. The foundations Web site says its "mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies, based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense."
