Resigning judge says he was tired of drug and gun cases

NORFOLK

U.S. District Judge Walter D. Kelley Jr. has had enough of hearing cases involving drugs, guns and illegal immigrants.

He said he wants to return to cases he can sink his legal teeth into - such as disputes over intellectual property.

"I don't so much enjoy the day-to-day drugs and guns and immigration cases that make up much of our docket," Kelley said this week after announcing his resignation from the bench. "Other people enjoy it and don't like what I like - the big, complicated cases."

Kelley, a 52-year-old Norfolk native, accepted a position at the international law firm of Jones Day and will work out of its Washington office. He leaves the court less than four years after he was appointed by President Bush. His last day will be May 16.

2. Can't say I blame him
I'd hate to sit on drug cases day in and day out. The futility would be soul crushing. Even a Bush appointee would surely feel some of the senselessness.

4. This is the Bush mandate. Prosecute druggies but don't look at corporate fraud.
Gonzo's DoJ was restructured to ignore crimes done by corruption and fraud. Instead the prosecutors were told to go after the little guys. This came out in the Attorney Purge where USAs were fired for pursuing Abramoff, Doolittle, etal instead of following the Gonzo druggie mandate.

5. We need to end the drug war...
that would go a long way in reducing the ammount of crime and violence in America.

This guy is a fucking chump.

We have a nearly broke justice system that is tied up with a bunch of cases, and we have this chump complaining that he doesnt want to hear cases involving real criminals who probably hurt real people. Instead he would rather deal with cases involving intangibles and copyright infrigement.

6. I wonder what would happen if we decriminalized them all?
Not saying we should do it, but I can't help wondering how effective laws made to be broken really are.

Damned near every illegal drug possessor has a dealer. Damned near every illegal immigrant has an illegal employer. And just like illegal drugs and illegal immigrants, you're never going to get rid of the guns.

But you could cut down drastically on all three of those things with one simple solution: codified non-prosecution for nonviolent drug and gun possessors and immigrants who reliably finger their sources.

We'd have a lot of empty jails, but they'd make great grow rooms.
