Canada, U.S. quietly sign mutual military aid pact

Canada and the U.S. have signed an agreement that paves the way for the militaries from either nation to send troops across each other's borders during an emergency, but some are questioning why the Harper government has kept silent on the deal.

Neither the Canadian government nor the Canadian Forces announced the new agreement, which was signed Feb. 14 in Texas.

The U.S. military's Northern Command, however, publicized the agreement with a statement outlining how its top officer, Gen. Gene Renuart, and Canadian Lt.-Gen. Marc Dumais, head of Canada Command, signed the plan, which allows the military from one nation to support the armed forces of the other nation during a civil emergency.

The new agreement has been greeted with suspicion by the left wing in Canada and the right wing in the U.S.

The left-leaning Council of Canadians, which is campaigning against what it calls the increasing integration of the U.S. and Canadian militaries, is raising concerns about the deal.

I can assure we Canadians are a great deal more worried about the likelihood of American troops coming into Canada than Canadian troops going to the US.

2. Again.....That trick never works!
We got the Canadians to sign off military rights on the Great Lakes and now Homeland 'Security' boards Canadian pleasure boats on a regular basis. This can take place in US or Canadian waters. Canadians were surprised when their government had given the keys to the lakes to the US. Can't wait to hear how they will enjoy this new detail. I have begged every Canadian I know to wake up before it is too late, but I see it is too late now. Peace, Kim

22. Niagara Mohawk Power built and paid for by the citizens
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 04:32 PM by mac2
of Buffalo (at great expense). It was the first power plant of it's kind. Canada doesn't have one so the bought ours. Somehow the public company ended up being "privatized" by the crook Republican governor and Bush energy "for sale" department.

Buffalo power went off for a week after a storm of trees down, etc. That never happened in all my life of living there...44 years. It was a disaster like all the other Democratic city disasters since Bush stole power.

The power is now used by Toronto, CN. You can bet the cost of power went up in Western NY because of it. It was cheap power in the beginning and that's why Buffalo area on the Great Lakes prospered. Republicans rapped and removed their industries, etc. over the last twenty years. They lost half their population (much like the Brits did to Scotland).

Buffalo's biggest employer is now the State University. For a mid-sized city that's not enough jobs.

Yet they won't impeach and put the X-Governor of New York in jail. He's in the UN now.

21. These world order police could be used against us
using our tax dollars. Wonder where the trillions missing from the Defense Department went? It's Rumsfeld secret new mercenary military.

I heard they recruited the Iran Contra military units into our military by promising them citizenship. Good grief as an American soldier you don't know who are your enemy...those in your ranks or those behind you such as Blackwater. It's criminal and foolish.

They know our own troops won't attack protesters, prisoners, etc. So they are using "mercenaries". I suspected it for some time since you can't ID the police doing the beatings, etc. These guys in the photo you can tell are Asian and that's it.

Some town in Illinois got very upset to learn special riot police were being trained near them. People are aware that this President will use any possible way to control us and ruin our democracy.

Without openness and accountability we are in great danger.

Yet they won't impeach?

51. It's hard to elect a other color President
when the majority is white. Afro-Americans are 13% of the population. Hispanics were 13% and growing more everyday. If you do get a Afro-American I hope their politics are a lot better than Colin Powell, Ms. Rice, etc.

There are some minority candidates who don't care about America but want their own power regardless of their "clan".

I'd elect a purple President if their politics were really democratic.

24. Forming those big world order unions
Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 04:44 PM by mac2
is a dangerous thing since they could start to fight each other over power and resources. Already the EU is plundering our country. Of-course the few elite think they will control it all. That might get out of hand and others might rule instead. The arrogance and stupidity is staggering.

We citizens should be demanding they do more over population control and education so we won't have to fight over the crumbs left (no water, food, shelter, wars, etc.). Heck with religious organizations. They are self destructive in many ways. Little they care who dies or lives...and how they live.

Foreign policy is a very tricky process. Years of negotiation, etc. down the tubes...everyone for themselves. To change it and do it their way is dangerous. They have no idea how to do let alone do what is good for all of us. We live in a nuclear world with lots of mentally ill dictators who would love to kill a lot of people (no worry about the environment, the future, etc.).

Yet..they won't impeach him.

18. Virtual Anschluss proceeds apace.
You poor Canadians. Did you really think a tyranny such as Imperial Amerika would sit back and allow your freedom to exist right next door?

That would be bad business to allow Canadian freedom to exist, tauntingthe Imperial Subjects of Amerika with what we once had, but will likely never have again.

I also strongly suspect that one way or another, the Bushies got your Bushie Harper into office, be it with Nixon-style slush funds or outright election fraud like they do in the Empire.

Yes, es, I know Canadian elections aren't as easy to rig as Amerikan "elections" but it is naive to assume that the Bushies haven't found a way, and that plenty of cirrupt Canab=dien Bushies would be happy to help destroy your fredoms so they can possess the ashes just likethe Bushies now psosess the remnants of Old, free America.

Poor bastards. We're coming for you, and your unpatriotic freedoms. Better get ready and not look so smugly down at the virtual slaves to your south. We once felt smugly superior to the Russians in the 70s and 80s, now we ARE the Russians of the 70s and 80s.

workers". Ya...like that will work? Everyone has a power blot today.

When they signed NAFTA the unions should have been in the streets. Nope the union leaders just sent in statements, etc. to the media. What was that? Some workers broke off to form another union against "free trade" but on the whole little was done.

Nor for the passage of the additional trade agreements done behind closed doors. Which are unconstitutional and an insult to American workers and farmers. What Constitutional duties Congress?

I'll never forget Howard Dean when he ran for President in Iowa. He stood up there and told them NAFTA was good for us and he was supporting it regardless of their disapproval. What? They looked pretty angry. And people wonder why Dean lost in Iowa (not even a big union state).

They have been shoving these trade agreements down our throats now for many years. They are done in secret because they are not in our best interest. Not one of the leading candidates for President really opposes any of them. Isn't that strange in the worker's party (Democrats)?

59. I'm not sure your reply was intended for my post per se. But
"world unions for workers" make a lot of sense, imho

Global corporations have monopsony power (the power of the big 'buyer' of labor). So what better way to combat the monopsony power of global corporations that for labor to use international collective bargaining agreements to deploy its potential monopoly power as a seller of labor?

I'm a former shop steward in a teaching assistants local at UW-Madison. One of my big complaints about the American labor movement of the past 50 years is this "I've got mine, to hell with the rest of you" nationalist mentality that has seemed to pre-dominate. What is needed to build truly powerful labor is an "internationalist" mentality, imho.

O the year was 1778
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen
God damn them all
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,
The last of Barrett's Privateers

2. O Elcid Barrett cried the town
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
Would make for him the Antelope's crew
God damn them all . . . .

3. The Antelope sloop was a sickening site
How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now
She'd list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags
God damn them all . . . .

Ok, technically they were British, but that's like calling the American Colonists British. The troops were inhabitants of Canada = Canadians.

(the Commonwealth nations) tried to remove the Queen's rule and influence once and for all. They even wanted a vote. Australia I believe did but the question was so it was a win, win either way.

Then 911 happened. It was her "Trifecta" too. Now they are removing the rights of those citizens. The ruling elite used 911 to destroy democracy around the world.

Wonder what the Queen is giving Bush for his Americas Union (Canada)? Or is she to rule once again (Bush her royal lap dog). The Brits and Canadians own a lot of America right now. They have since Reagan and his debt.

The people are victims just like us.
