US beef 'passed off as Australian'
One of Australia's key beef customers has confirmed that some United States beef is being illegally labelled and sold as Australian product.

South Korea banned imports of US beef when a case of mad cow disease was discovered in Washington state before Christmas, leaving Korean wholesalers with product still to sell.

Mike Heywood from Meat and Livestock Australia says that means Australian beef is in high demand, leading to the labelling scam.

"The problem will be if these reports keep going, consumers just simply lose faith in the integrity of the labelling system," he said.

1. THAT's why the beef lobby's opposed to labelling!
Golly, I just can't believe that an entire industry would lie to protect profits and resist regulation that could protect Americans, all the while under the watchful eye of a diligent administration!

Eat more chicken. Screw 'em.

2. Eat more chicken? There is no lesser of two evils in the meat industry
Chicken is pumped full of "pre-emptive" antibiotics, and, just to make sure those breasts are big and plump like the American consumer wants them, they've got hormones fed to them, too.

Buy free-range if you eat meat, usually labeled as organic. Costs more, so eat less of it and live a longer, healthier life.

Cooking the books, laying the blame, and finding a fall guy, in the name of brotherhood.

3. A turnabout is fair play...
after all, some Australian politicians (one in particular) are being sold as American (well, sort of, but you get my point, I hope).

5. We understand each other, I am glad to see...
I have some friends living in Australia; refugees from Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. I would hate to think that they are living in an American territory.

8. The wheel turns
so much so that it's hard to realise that about twenty years ago we had an inquiry into our meat industry because of the corruption that was in place with meat substitution that makes this little effort look positively amateurish. Our meat was rejected all over the world. So we increased regulation and it worked but we wound it back after the panic was over. Le plus ca change....
