White House calls for end to Gaza violence: spokesman
Source: AFP

CRAWFORD, Texas (AFP) - The White House on Sunday called for an end to violence in Gaza and for a resumption of Middle East peace talks, as Israel kept up a deadly assault on the Hamas-run Palestinian strip.

"The violence needs to stop and the talks need to resume," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe told reporters at President George W. Bush's ranch in Texas.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will arrive in the region later this week on her latest attempt to push forward the troubled peace negotiations revived at a US-hosted summit just three months ago.

4. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE
I guess the Israeli death squads ran out of targets. The GOP uses Diebold to overturn elections while the Israelis use their IDF. Again, what's the definition of terrorism?

5. UK Government calls on Israel, Palestinians to 'step back from the brink' 22 minutes ago
LONDON (AFP) - Foreign Secretary David Miliband on Sunday called on Israelis and Palestinians to "step back from the brink" and keep the region's fragile peace process alive.

Miliband said that while he "condemned" the rocket attacks against Israel, the country's response had to be "in accordance with international law", which meant limiting the suffering of civilians and increasing the scope for negotiations to be restarted.

Israel was continuing its assault on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip on Sunday, prompting Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas to sever all contacts with the Jewish state.

The ground and air operation, which Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has vowed to continue, has killed 70 Palestinians since Saturday and earned Israel international condemnation for disproportionate use of force.
