Clinton lowers expectations in Wyoming
Source: AP/Yahoo

By SARA KUGLER, Associated Press Writer

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A day before Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama were to compete for a small scattering of delegates in Wyoming, Clinton cast herself as the underdog and said the odds are not in her favor. Clinton's campaign has sought to set low expectations for the Saturday caucuses in Wyoming as well as next week's primary in Mississippi, states where her campaign believes Obama has a better shot at winning.

"I said, 'Well you know what, I'm going to go to Wyoming anyway — I know it's an uphill climb, I'm aware of that," Clinton told an audience of more than 1,500 at a community college in Cheyenne. "But, you see, I am a fighter, and I believe it's worth fighting for your votes."

She set a similar tone while campaigning in Mississippi Thursday night and Friday morning. She said a win for her in that state would be a heavy lift because of Obama's appeal there. Twelve delegates will be awarded in Wyoming's caucuses, followed by 33 on Tuesday in Mississippi.

The relatively small number of delegates in these states, not seen as important weeks ago, have gained value now that the race is down to a numbers game, following Clinton's triple-win this week in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, where she narrowed the gap with Obama.

16. Yeah, the Biograph and its soda-pop encrusted turnstyle.
I saw Todd Haynes' Superstar, the Karen Carpenter Story and a million other things there, as I know you did.

And spent part of a very memorable psilocybin evening there watching an animation festival.

Had to leave the concession stand area because I was laughing too hard at everything the poor popcorn guy was saying to the customers.

19. A Werner Herzog film festival
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 01:15 AM by Patsy Stone
That was a way to spend a weekend. :)

I loved that schedule sheet they used to make, with the hundreds of little boxes with the movie synopses in them. I think I still have one stashed away somewhere. I used to walk there from Mt. Pleasant. It was just about too long of a walk, but I didn't care.

If I ever win the lottery, opening a similar theater is one of the things I'd like to do.

Not sure I was ever tripping while I was there but on cold winter days, I took peppermint schnapps along on the walk, and was very warm and toasty when I finally arrived.

23. Were you there during the Mt. Pleasant riots when the Church's Fried Chicken burned down?
I just put on the lp of 9353's To Whom it May Consume.

Anyway, nice threadjack. At what liquor did you buy your schnapps?

24. It was on the corner of Park Rd and Mount Pleasant?
Man, you're making me think too much tonight.

Right up the street from the 42 bus stop. I lived in one of the old Victorians on Park Road. Very convenient to have a liquor store within in crawling distance. I don't remember the Church's burning down, but I do remember buying food at that Church's. I was a starving intern/college student, so I survived mostly on ramen and Kraft mac and cheese. What year was the riot?

I wish my turntable worked. Maybe that's what I'll do this weekend -- buy a USB turntable and rip all of my records.

Is it really hijacking if it's my own thread? :)

I'm a good driver... Don't worry honey...

I think I know that liquor store, but it was long long ago, so I can't be sure.

I've got to rip this 9353 record tomorrow.

5. She does this in every state, doesn't she? If she wins, it's important,
if she doesn't, it's a 'small' state. I hope I'm not the only one who's noticed that. And hi, Patsy!

11. Nope, but nice try. Hillary would get creamed if she tried to pull a stunt like that. Obama lost.
The voters of Texas preferred Hillary, even though Obama outspent her by 2 to 1.

22. Not so fast with Texas...
http://www.npr.org/watchingwashington/2008/03/split_decision_may_shift_texas.html

"The Texas Democratic Party says Obama's wider caucus margin will probably give him a 37-30 break in the delegates allocated from the caucuses. The primary had almost twice that many delegates at stake, but Clinton's primary margin there was much narrower. So when the two steps are all done, the projection is for Obama to emerge with 98 delegates to Clinton's 95."

They have until three days after the caucus to mail in the results by snail mail. Let's talk again on Wednesday of next week and see how it goes.

35. He made up huge ground in spite of her attacks and her machine.
AND, he WON the caucus, probably by at least 3-2. Hillary had lllllong standing machine and demographic support in TX, and he nearly beat her in the primary.
Please try to understand how electoral political structures work.

29. Nope. I swear, I don't know
"A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question posed for rhetorical effect rather than to receive an answer.<1> Rhetorical questions encourage the listener to reflect on what the implied answer to the question must be. When a speaker states, "How much longer must our people endure this injustice?" or "Do you really think I want to have a Star Trek themed wedding?", or "How many times do I have to tell you to stop walking into the house with mud on your shoes?"; no formal answer is expected. Rather, it is a device used by the speaker to assert or deny something. Some prescriptivists consider rhetorical questions to be "grammatical errors" when used formally.<2>

32. I'll tell you, then
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 10:16 AM by Patsy Stone
It's called "getting out in front of the story". You put out the bad news yourself, therefore you control the message. The media covers it because the campaign sends this out a press release, or mentions it on a media call. This way the press doesn't sit around and file stories about how she thinks she'll win, and when she doesn't, the story can't morph into something like "Clinton loses WY, a state where she aimed for victory", or any number of other angles implying this was a loss they never expected.

With all of the sarcasm around here these days, you could very well have asked the question already knowing the answer (i.e. because she does this every time, and why should she stop now?) which would have made this a rhetorical question.

Does that help?
