Daily News RecordHARRISONBURG - A man pleaded guilty on Monday to abducting a James Madison University student in October.
Wilbur Alton Comer, 60, of Harrisonburg, pleaded guilty to the abduction charge under a plea agreement that included the commonwealth dropping a sexual battery charge. Court documents indicate the victim, originally from Rwanda, was reluctant to testify in the case.
"She recently came to this country and does not fully understand the criminal justice system," court documents state. "She escaped Rwanda and lived in a refugee camp for several years."
Rockingham County Circuit Court Judge James Lane sentenced Comer to five years in prison, but suspended the entire sentence, placing him on one year's supervised probation.
The Rockingham County Sheriff's Department arrested Comer in October following a complaint by the student. He was charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of abduction and kidnapping, said Sgt. Felicia Glick of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.
