Clinton denounces 'doctored' video that insults Hoosiers
Source: The Indianapolis Star

A video of a long-time friend to Sen. Hillary Clinton using racial slurs to describe Indiana residents spread through the Internet like wildfire today, triggering a firestorm of questions before the video was exposed as a hoax.

...

The video, uploaded to the popular video-sharing site YouTube and spread via blogs and e-mail, showed former Commerce Secretary Mickey Kantor describing Hoosiers using a racial epithet.

...

In an interview with the Journal & Courier, Clinton said she couldn't imagine who was behind the video.

"It's just something that is clearly unfortunate that people would go to all the time and trouble to make something up like that," Clinton told the J&C. "And I assume nobody would believe such a thing, because it's totally wrong. And the director of it confirmed that it was doctored. Maybe the press should be trying to figure out why he did what he did."

Kevin Griffis, communications director with Obama's campaign in Indiana, said that campaign had nothing to do with the video.

6. Try Hillary...trying to create an anti-issue because she's getting her ass handed to her.
Yeah, right. Obama's going to get into video-fixing when he's kicking Hillary's ass...you bet.

Maybe you should check out how Hill's campaign darkened Obama's face and squished it, just to make him look a little more negroid and a little more sinister in one of your candidate's ads.

8. Well, if Kantor sues and wins, Obama campaign can sue you and win
This is a public forum and you have done exactly what the author of the tape did. Good job!

23. Why would someone running for president...
and honestly wanting the office doctor a video whose original is available to millions of people at their local video store. What a ridiculous assumption to say that Obama as a presidential hopeful would do this. Preposterous.

Just as the George Bush "potty stop" note was darkened so you could see the words better.

19. Yes, it WAS doctored. The movie is ON Youtube. The original audio,
which was in section nine of the YT segments, was totally different from the bullshit audio in the "taken down" doctored version.

11. Another Hoosier chiming in: according to the two filmmakers, Kantor said no such thing
And no, I'm not a Clinton supporter. I'm not an Obama supporter either. I support the nominee, whoever that ends up being.

Here's some coverage of this flap - - sorry to break the rules about the number of paragraphs we can post...

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/05/official-transc.html

Official Transcript: Kantor Never Impugned Hoosiers

May 02, 2008 6:18 PM

Forgoing for a moment the dirty trick of the doctored clip from “The War Room,” which falsely had Mickey Kantor using a racial slur, the filmmaker behind the documentary has posted the clip on his Web site to clarify that other point of confusion -- what Kantor was referring to when he cursed. (An apparent source of confusion since the movie came out and some newspaper writers thought he was cursing Indianans. See previous post for that.)

Filmmakers Chris Hegedus and D A Pennebaker write: "We would like to respond to some erroneous statements made today about our film, THE WAR ROOM. These statements alleged certain remarks to Mickey Kantor that simply are not true. The transcript of the scene in question confirms this."

The official transcript:

GEORGE AND CARVILLE: Indiana, we're ahead.

JACQUELINE: Indiana!

GEORGE: Kentucky.

CARVILLE: Kentucky is five. Michigan is eleven, New York's done.

GEORGE: Holy s---, we're pulling away in Ohio.

CARVILLE: Oklahoma we're up.

GEORGE: Tied in Texas.

CARVILLE: Tied in Texas. It looks good. Now let's just say that. I like the text here.

GEORGE: Can you beep Wendy please? Looks pretty good. Looks pretty good.

MICKEY KANTOR: Look at Indiana. Wait, wait. Look at Indiana. Forty-two, forty. It doesn't matter if we win. Those people are s----ing (oh, excuse me) in the White House. How would you like to be... Look at Texas, go down to Texas.

CARVILLE: Even.

MICKEY: Yeah. Thirty-nine, thirty-nine.

CARVILLE: Perot's kind of holding, isn't he?

GEORGE: He held.

MICKEY: Yeah, he held. His numbers held. I'm sort of surprised, frankly.

***

So Kantor was NOT insulting Hoosiers, he was experiencing a moment of schadenfreude about the Bush (Sr.) White House.

16. When I listed to my own copy of the War Room (which I have owned for a number of years)
I heard what was on the official transcript. Kantor said that they were "sh*tting" themselves in the White House, not that Hoosiers were "sh*t". There's nothing remotely like the word "n*gger" uttered in that scene on the DVD I own.

F.Y.I. It's fairly easy to remove and/or dub the audio track of a video file - - you can do an okay job with your average Mac and the software that comes standard - - and then uploading an edited file to You Tube. Millions of people do every day - - only they are honest about the editing and call them "Mash-Ups" or "Fan Videos" or "Stephen Colbert's Green Screen Challenge Entry" or some similar, helpful label.

21. I'm glad Obama didn't take the bait.
It would have been fun to watch the news make her squirm for a bit, but I would never want to see Obama resort to spreading such fluff. We can leave that to the Republicans and Hillary.

24. Please, Clinton supporters, don't be disingenuous.
I am pretty sure if this had been something bad about Obama that was unsubstantiated many of you would have run with it too. It's human nature, it's the reason why spam works and the other internet b.s. that gets forwarded all over. We've reached the point where supporters of both candidates are more than willing to think the worst of the person they do not back. It's too bad that it's come to that because it is getting to the point where I am almost ashamed to admit I am a Democrat.

I have to admit, this is my first post about this subject and I have not seen the video and I don't need to see it. When I first read about it, something did not seem right about it--the same way I feel when I get the latest internet urban myth or chain letter forwarded to me. Those who fell for it and then ran with it, spreading it all over, should justifiably feel ashamed (I hope you are capable of feeling ashamed).
