Cheney defends economy ("remains the envy of the world")
Source: phillyburbs

In Northeast Philadelphia Thursday morning, Vice President Dick Cheney said that America's economy “remains the envy of the world,” and that a recent economic “slowdown” could have been much worse without President Bush's economic policies.

Cheney said that because of those policies, particularly tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003, “the slowdown that did come was a fairly mild one.”

“For the better part of six years now, this nation's economy grew without pause,” Cheney said.

On Thursday morning, the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the region crept to a record $3.67 a gallon, global food prices continued to soar and a Gallup poll showed that 86 percent of Americans believe the economy is getting worse. Yet Cheney said Americans should be “confident of the road ahead.”

Congressman Patrick Murphy ripped Cheney for his view of the economy.

“To tell Pennsylvania families that our economy is strong when so many of them are struggling is a slap in the face,” said Murphy, a Democrat who represents Bucks County and small parts of Montgomery County and Philadelphia. “It's time for Democrats and Republicans to start working together to solve problems instead of pretending that there are none.”

19. My thoughts too sasquatch
They know exactly whats going on. They just lie with impunity because they know the media will not call em on it. To the criminal Bush administration perception management is their whole game. And when you control the media that job is made much easier. They say everything is great not because they are delusional...its because they are all serial liars and will say anything...ANYTHING as long it makes them look good.

14. you're right
megalomaniacs - they are never wrong, never will admit they are wrong, don't even believe that they are wrong; center of the universe, all-powerful and omnipotent (in their eyes); everything bad is denied or blamed on others.. sociopathic... yep.

We've got that going on with the Mayor of Detroit right now, too.

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

6. As if..
Cheney said that because of those policies, particularly tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003

But there were no tax cuts. It's impossible to cut taxes while in a deficit situation, because you're already spending more than you take in.

What Bush actually did was BORROW EVEN MORE MONEY, then give to taxpayers as a loan which they (and their children, and their children's children) will have to repay with interest.

That's NOT "cutting taxes" It's robbing Peter to pay Paul.

(Which will always gain you the support of Paul)

Then there's the targeting of those cuts, er.. loans to consider.

Everyone I know (including myself) is struggling right now - it's frightening.

But I'm sure that McCain can relate to that struggle while he sips a martini aboard his suga-mamma's private jet... :sarcasm: Wonder what it costs to fuel up that little toy?

21. They're coming to take him away ha ha, to the funny farm....
Damn, only the destruction of the state mental health system has allowed these lunatics to prosper at our expense.

In a more rational time, these people would have been drugged and plugged into the mains until the men in white coats decided they were enough in touch with reality that their families could take them home for short visits.

They sure as hell didn't get into high office.

23. Did DC spike the water supply running to the White House and Old Executive Building?
Edited on Fri May-09-08 11:30 AM by Mike Daniels
I keep trying to figure out how anyone in this administration is able to make statements that clearly run opposite of every measureable index.

The only think I can think of is that someone dosed the water supply running to that area of DC with some serious mind-altering substances. It's the only thing that makes sense.

I guess there is the off chance that if they just faced up and say "well, we were wrong about everything....sorry" that we'd see the first lynching to ever take place on the White House grounds. However, by continuing to stick to their "everything's just dandy" approach they can still bilk the dead-enders for appearance fees after they've finally gone out of office.

35. This is what happens when we refuse to allow people in power to say publicly
that someone is, stated flatly, a liar. Doing so is considered "unprofessional". We are completely hobbled by our own sense of decorum and high-mindedness. There is a place for those things, it is true, but we have to begin to realize that there are those who will exploit that as a weakness rather than bow to it as a strength.

We need to start using uglier language when they pull this kind of crap. I'd like to hear something like "Mr. Cheney is full of shit" out of one of the mouths of power. Or, perhaps, strong accusations such as "I'm beginning to believe the vice president is becoming clinically insane, and I think we need to have a doctor examine him for fitness of office" or some such.

There's a time to be nice, a time to be mean, and a time to be just plain brutal. We're still being nice when we should be being brutal.

I vote CALLOUS LIAR! ...a recent economic "slowdown" could have been much worse without pResident bush's economic policies.

Never mind that his "economic policies" were/are directly responsible for the deliberate "slowdown" in the economy.
