Bob Barr expected to announce Libertarian White House bid
Edited on Mon May-12-08 08:32 AM by powergirl
Source: Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON - Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr is expected to announce that he's running for president as a Libertarian.

His candidacy would be a wild card in the White House race that many believe would hurt Republican Sen. John McCain.

Barr had scheduled a news conference Monday. He first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner thanks to the national profile he developed as a Georgia congressman from 1995 to 2003.

Barr, 59, helped lead Bill Clinton's impeachment. He quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism.

34. He, or another like him, may still run
Just let a Democratic nominee start battling McCain for the independents, and McCain is bound to say something to alienate the far-Right Christian fundies. That's one reason he needs to be pressed on his having actively sought the Hagee endorsement.

10. I have a friend who bleeds Republican who will not vote for McCain.
He would probably vote for a Libertarian. (The irony here is that he claims with McCain there will be 2 Democrats running for president while many here would claim if Clinton were the nominee there would be 2 Republicans.)

13. Hmmmm
I like the thought of Barr running as a Libertarian. I still have lingering resentments over Barr's role as part of the Gingrich horde, but he seems to hew slightly closer to Libertarian principles than most Rethuglies do.

I think I like the idea of a Barr candidacy even more while thinking about our own Democratic Party after this very long, messy primary season is over. There are a lot of hurt feelings and angry words, and I am scared stiff that a lot of former supporters might be tempted to stay home when their votes are REALLY needed in November. We Democrats can use all the help we can get.

I also think that there are a lot of genuine conservatives who are seething about the route the Republican Party has taken; I'd be pleased to see them show their dissatisfaction with the GOP by voting for Barr.

Of course, the disadvantage for us Democrats in a heavier-weight Libertarian contender is that come as early as 2010, the Rethuglies will be claiming that their loss was due to the third-party interference and that the reason that the GOP lost was because it wasn't "conservative" enough.

21. Volunteer for the Libertarian Party to steal Repuke votes in swing states.
Especially if you're young and single.

Libertarians are Republicans who want to smoke dope and get laid.

Try and hang around the Libertarian Wiccan Caucus to improve your odds of a good time.

30. I used to live in Barr's GA district for years before moving...
I'm convinced that he's really a brother. His hair is kinkier than mine, his lips are much fuller and his nose is wider. There's always been some speculation about his ethnicity.

On a serious note, kudos to Barr for seeing the light. He has redeemed himself somewhat since his Clinton impeachment years.

32. The Congressional Black Caucus always sent Barr
notices of their meeting when he was in Congress. I'm told that in the black community, he is considered a black man who is "passing." His first two wives were black, his current wife is white. Yes, he's one of those ardent "family values" Republicans (or, former Republican) who loves families so much, he has several.
