Speaking for Dems, Boccieri backs GI bill (radio address)
Source: Associated Press

An Ohio Democrat who flew in Iraq as an Air Force Reserve pilot has called on President Bush and Sen. John McCain to rethink opposition to an expansion of the GI bill.

John Boccieri (boh-chee-AIR-ee) gave the Democrats' weekly radio address today. He says that Bush and McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, should back the new GI bill. Boccieri is a state senator who is running for Congress in Ohio's 16th District.

Democrats in Congress want to guarantee full college scholarships for those who serve in the military for three years. Opponents say that providing such a benefit would encourage members of the military to leave after only one enlistment.

State Sen. John Boccieri Delivers This Week's Democratic Radio Address
Sadly, President Bush has threatened to veto the bill. Senator John McCain, who hopes to take his place, not only opposed it, but when given the opportunity to support his fellow veterans on the eve of Memorial Day weekend, didn't even show up to vote nor express his concerns. Our veterans need to know that leaders in Washington have their back, and vetoing this measure will send a clear message that politics has defeated patriotism.
