Mexican miners stage (one day) nationwide strike

MEXICO CITY — Mexican miners said on Monday their one-day nationwide strike could last longer as a dispute between their union boss, who has taken refuge in Canada, and the government raged.

The strike halted production at big steel companies, and mining firms said output would also be hurt by the 24-hour work stoppage involving up to 70,000 workers. The union groups together both miners and metal workers.

Analysts, however, doubted the strike would be extended beyond Monday and saw only minor impact. Share prices in Mexican mining stocks were not immediately affected.

Union official Carlos Pavon said 90 per cent of the union's members reported they had laid down their tools early in the morning.
