Strayhorn says son Scott McClellan tried to quit White House job earlier
Source: The Dallas Morning

AUSTIN -- Scott McClellan tried to resign as White House press secretary because of growing concerns about the administration’s direction, but President Bush urged him to stay on the job.

Critics have said Mr. McClellan should have quit, not continue to represent the White House despite reservations that he describes in his sharply critical memoir.

His mother, Texas political veteran Carole Keeton Strayhorn says he tried to resign in late 2005, but the president talked him out of it.

...

Concerned that his credibility had been damaged, Mr. McClellan told the president he wanted to leave. Instead, Mr. Bush put his arm around the aide and convinced him to stay, saying he was needed at the White House.

...

Mrs. Strayhorn, who alienated political allies when she broke with the GOP in 2006 and ran for governor as an independent, had some advice as her son weathers the same kind of storm. “I said to Scott, ‘Your true friends are your friends and those who aren’t, aren’t.’”

2. I disagree
anyone can be caught up in the power trip and then realize they are being bought or used and repent. Everyone deserves a second chance at getting it right. Take it from an old lady who has been around a good while.

3. I'm warily supportive of Scott. After the interview with Keith, more supportive. But
Edited on Thu May-29-08 10:52 PM by UTUSN
while everything critical he's saying about Shrub is what most of us here have always known about Shrub, he appears to leave in all the caveats about how much "affection" he has for Shrub and how he doesn't believe that Shrub HIMSELF actually "lied" or did all of those nasty things on purpose, just from listening to other people. But in the Keith interview he said some damning things about Shrub.

Now, that said, I'll go back to his mommy, who, THANKS TO HER running as an Independent along with a-hole Kinky FRIEDMAN thereby ensured that A-hole Governor Goodhair would be reelected---even with, like 29% of the vote or whatever his miserable percentage was.

Here's a golden oldie about Mommy:

The radio dude asked GOODHAIR, "My staff wants me to ask you one question: What did you ever DO to Carole (McCLELLAN) STRAYHORN?" GOODHAIR just laughed and laughed. Later a Dem state Representative was on and said, "We Dems have just stood by, like, we didn't have do DO anything, just watch these two go at each other like the WWF."

It comes down to Ms STRAYHORN's running against GOODHAIR. It is thought she might add to her surnames (KEETON-McCLELLAN-RYLANDER-STRAYHORN) to appeal to the Hispanic vote by adding MARTINEZ-LOPEZ-BUSTAMANTE.

.... Like most families, McClellan’s has its glories and its embarrassments. His mother, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, who is divorced from his father, is a colorful and powerful political figure in Texas, where she serves as the state’s comptroller. Before that, she was the mayor of Austin. Her longtime political alliance with the Bushes undoubtedly helped her son land a job as the spokesman for George W. when he was governor of Texas. McClellan’s brother Mark is the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, in Washington. McClellan’s father, Barr, a writer and business consultant now living in Gulfport, Mississippi, also has an abiding interest in Texas politics, as well as a flair for producing mystery dramas at local theatres. Now the senior McClellan appears to have combined these talents by writing an ostensibly nonfiction book titled “Blood, Money & Power: How L.B.J. Killed J.F.K.,” which will be published later this month. ....

Dean Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn Blvd

Now that Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn has remarried (again), do you suppose they'll rename 26th Street to match?

.... technically the street is named after her father, former Dean of the UT Law School. But I've always figured it was really named in tribute to Carole K.M.R.S. and if she weren't a powerful politician, UT and the city could've found somebody else to name it after.

4. Ariana Huffington, David Horowitz, David Brock? Here's ........
....2 Liberals and 1 nutjob who "switched sides". I really like Brocks outfit (Media Matters?), but I always have had problems with someone doing a "180". I am now 61 and have ALWAYS been a Liberal. I suppose someone can always wake up and see the light, but I'm always doubtful.

5. Yip, people who switch have something else going on. They also tend to go to extremes
Not just shifting, but switching to the farthest end of whatever. Al CAPP (cartoonist, Li'l Abner) and RAYGUN were both FDR Libs.

One of my examples that is not popular here is Jane FONDA: She switched from (count'em up) poor-little-rich-girl, starlet, sexpot, sex tool, activist, fitness guru, mogul's wife, and probably more. The two common themes were her search for daddy's emotion and approval and HER always finding something to PREACH to everybody else about. Along the way she's done some good. But mostly she was just lost.

9. One who is not ours but known for going to extremes is
Chuck Colson of Watergate fame. First he was a fanatical marine. Then he was jailed in the Watergate aftermath. Then he became a born-again Christian.

About twenty years ago, I remember reading a book by him that was very good. He made well thought out arguments for separation of church and state. I thought he meant it. But he has since become another wingnutty Christian who longs for theocracy. His ministry is dangerous.

11. & one of COLSON's flying monkeys is Roger STONE, still going strong
He was the "family values" dude of the Bob DOLE campaign, who was outed as a swinging-couples type. He and his wife Nikki (a Cuban) were probably the ones who set up CBS/Dan RATHER. Recently, he revealed how he found out about SPITZER's escapades and reported him to the FBI 4 months before the resignation. Still going strong.

which is part of the Fellowship (the parent organization); it has prayer 'cells,' groups of prayer partners. Senator Clinton is part of the CO-FOUNDER'S (Doug Coe's) prayer cell (Doug Coe's prayer cell). Aren't these connections interesting?

22. David Brock was NOT that conservative to begin with
Get a copy of his first book, "Blinded By The Right" (mainly because it's an excellent primer on the RW as expert propagandists). In it he describes witnessing audience treatment of a conservative guest speaker on his college campus caused him to become sympathetic to someone he wouldn't normally agree with. It was a turning point for his political sympathies for years to come; then he ended up returning to his original roots and to his present political views after realizing that his lucrative career as a right-wing "journalist" had hurt Anita Hill and was headed for hurting Hillary Clinton as well.

Therefore, he wasn't a rightwinger to begin with; he became his basic original self (albeit with a more mature outlook) again after renouncing his long "stage" of radical conservatism.

As for Huffington, I'm glad for her change - I don't care why or how she changed, it has been much for the better.

Horowitz is in a category by himself. It would benefit humanity if he would wind up as a normal person, somewhere in the middle.

13. It isn't that at all, they get out because it just ain't cool anymore.
Conservatism is dying, just look at all the panic stricken Republican pols. They need to come up with another "contract on America" or some such BS idea again. The people just got tired of their empty promises about "the market", abortion, gays etc and seeing their standard of living go down, their jobs disappear, and costs on EVERYTHING go up.

17. Exactly. The fruits of GOP "CONserveTHEMSELVES" is what the current crop of gangsters is running fro
They have been gradually eating away at our government since saint ray gun took the stage.
The fruits of low taxes and ineffective regulation?
Rampant corporate corruption, stagflation and a drastically declining standard of living for 80% of Americans.
Their answer?
Blame W. If he had done it right everything would be fine.
