Senate Climate Bill Blocked
Source: ABC News

Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, pushing debate over the world's biggest environmental concern to next year for a new Congress and president.

Democratic leaders fell a dozen votes short of getting the 60 needed to end a Republican filibuster on the measure and bring the bill up for a vote, prompting Majority Leader Harry Reid to pull the legislation from consideration.

The Senate debate focused on bitter disagreement over the expected economic costs of putting a price on carbon dioxide, the leading greenhouse gas that comes from burning fossil fuels. Opponents said it would lead to higher energy costs

2. I guess that's what Jesus would do?
It's just stunning that the Repubicans apparently still don't understand that people are sick of their bullshit games. Just look at any right/wrong track poll.

5. Bush would have vetoed it anyway.
It would require a super majority to put that bill through now. The Repubs didn't want Bush to have to veto because John McCain would have had to clarify his position on climate change now that he's flipping to the right on a number of issues. He would either had to oppose Bush and risk the ire of conservatives or support Bush and give us some ammo on his supposed moderation regarding climate change.

The bill wasn't a really good bill anyway and when Obama takes the presidency and our party increases its majority in the legislature, we'll get a much more effective bill passed. IMHO, the Repub's corporate base would have been better off with this bill instead of the one that will likely go through later. They only opposed it out of election year politics.

12. But yet another example
of the Reid theory that "spinelessness is best." His position of requiring DEMS to get 60, or no bill to the Prez is stupid - especially now in the run up to November. My prayer is for 61 Dem senators - so we can shit can holy Joe.

22. There is much more to this
than what the ABC Article tells. The bill they were referring to was for cloture to the Boxer Amendment Substitute Bill S.Amdt 4825, I don't know why those Dem's voted no on that bill, considering one was Dorgan there must have been some good reason but who knows, yet. The Lieberman-Warner S. 3036 bill had many problems and I for one am glad it didn't go anywhere. Maybe its better for Reid to wait until the next Congress when we have a more solid majority to re-introduce a Climate Control Bill, face it Booo$h would veto any bill now and it would be very difficult to get enough Reptilians to support it anyway. All that aside, it also gives Dem's another club to beat their opponents with.
