Cheney criticizes McCain's plan to cut gas tax
Source: MSNBC

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday rejected a suspension of the federal gasoline tax as proposed by his party's presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain. Cheney said it would offer little help to consumers coping with gas prices around $4 a gallon.

The vice president's critique went further than President Bush's own comments on the idea, which appears dead anyway.

"I think it's a false notion, in the sense that you're not going to have much of an impact, given the size of the gasoline tax on the total cost of the gallon of gas," Cheney said when asked about the matter during a luncheon appearance. "You might buy a little bit of relief there, but it's minimal."

6. How will the media play this?
No matter what the issue, the media are excellent at flushing out some low-level factotum whom you've never heard of who can nominally call himself a Democrat, and telling their tired old story of "Democrats are divided." They'll even use Joe Lieberman or Zell Miller in a pinch to go over this ground.

But now the sitting vice president publicly differs with the presumptive nominee, and they're both Republicans! How will the media play this? I'm guessing with total silence or the obliquest of mentions.

7. "See how different I am from Bush-Cheney!" - John McCain
How fucking predictable. See many faux "attacks" coming from Cheney over the next few months in order to legitimate the "difference" between Bush-Cheney regime and "maverick" John McCain. Bush will refuse to take part, because he can't tolerate even the illusion of disagreement from his almighty word, even if that illusion is designed to 'secure" his legacy. So Cheney, who is a universal badguy and is at least smart enough to know it, will play bad cop corporatist to McCain's good cop populist. I can't imagine that anyone would even have the energy to fall for such nonsenses, other than the deeply stupid American press corps.

18. You definitely have it.
These are not people who publicly disagree unless there's a reason for it. Their organization is slightly cleft and in some disarray currently, it's true, but not as much as it appears, or as we would wish. They are still orchestrators of the highest degree, particularly Cheney and anyone directly connected with him. Anything of this sort needs to be very closely scrutinized, if not scoffed at out of hand.

8. OK, what the fuck is this about?
Cheney doesn'd do or say anything without having made a cold-blooded calculation first. So come on, people. Explain to pore ol' Jackpine just what the hell is going on here? What self-serving cause is Cheney working on here? He would not be gratuitously be putting sticks in McNutso's spokes. There's gotta be some deeper game afoot. And I'll be the first to admit I don't see it.

9. Hell has officially frozen over

Dick Cheney makes sense, and I agree with him:

"I think it's a false notion, in the sense that you're not going to have much of an impact, given the size of the gasoline tax on the total cost of the gallon of gas," Cheney said when asked about the matter during a luncheon appearance. "You might buy a little bit of relief there, but it's minimal."

Now, we all know this is obvious - an 18 cent per-gallon decrease in something which costs $4 per gallon is only a 4.5 percent decrease, but I'm shocked one of Team Bush actually points this out.

11. This Is Just A Choreographed "Maverick Attack".........
Bush and Cheney don't have anything to lose by disagreeing with McCain as they can't be re-elected. What they can do is help McCain by providing McCain with ammunition to make it look like he is not going to be a third Bush term. *Co is allowing McCain to look like a 'maverick'. I call this the "Maverick Attack". This is purely Rovian.

15. Is it "Rovian" to make McCain look stupid while Cheney looks rational?
Make sure people realize that cutting the Fed gas tax is a meaningless gesture? Sure, it points out the differences between the two...poorly.

16. Political Tactic. Full of BS.
Cheney is doing this only helps McCain as it helps separate him from the Bush White House. This will be played in the media, obviously, and it will be a step toward: "See look, John McCain isn't a third term for Bush!"

A good political move. Sadly, most people will not get it and it will likely work.

17. Congress was put up for bid along with the oil leases...
When Congress decided to open bids for the oil leases, both onshore and offshore, years ago it also opened bids for Congress.

The Republicans keep talking about "our" oil when in fact what really is "our" oil isn't. It's the oil companies' oil. Not ours.

The Republicans keep talking about "our" oil companies when in fact they are no longer "our" oil companies. As we saw with Halliburton which decided finally to move its headquarters to Dubai when Congress started asking too many questions about how it skirted tax laws. Easiest solution for Halliburton was to just move to Dubai and pay no taxes at all.

Instead of impeaching the administration, Congress should impeach itself. Since it won't hopefully the American people will. At the polls in November. Each and every incumbent. All of them. Throw them all out. None of them are Democrats or Republicans. They are Republicrats. Serving the oligarchy of the corporations instead of the democracy of the people.
