Congress halts mining near Grand Canyon (Repubs walk out in protest)
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - One million acres of public land around the Grand Canyon would be off limits to any new mining for three years under an emergency resolution adopted by a House committee.

The House Natural Resources Committee voted 20-2 Wednesday to compel the Interior Department to withdraw the property from any new mining claims. Supporters of the measure said a rush of claims to mine the area for uranium to feed nuclear power plants threatened the natural landscape that lures five million visitors to the park each year. The mining could also taint the Colorado River, a drinking water source for millions.

9. Aren't the Repukes walking out in protest about three times per week anymore?
Jeez, what a bunch of crybabies -- have to stomp off and pout everytime they don't get their way.

I guess that' one way to get the afternoon off on the taxpayer's dime.

20. Capitalism is good for some things
Other things like community resources, housing, food, etc should be held by the people in commons.

Media and unneccesary items should be ruled with market pressures.

22. Corporations should revert to what was intended . . .
that they be raised for a specific job/project and when completed they should be folded.

Meanwhile, founders always feared the power of capital/capitalism --

Currently, the corporations have so much money and power --- having bought so much of our

government/legislators/courts --- that our people's government doesn't have the power to

fold them.

25. Yes corporations need to be dissolved
What's wrong with an LLC? The only real difference is that corporations have ZERO accountability to the public.

Founders feared the power of concentrated capitalism. Concentrated wealth and power are the antithesis of capitalism.

18. Why didn't the republicans have the cajones to just vote it down?
Walking out shows no courage, no integrity, no moral fortitude.

I could've sworn that was all the Rez other than the canyon itself. More uranium mining on the Rez? Like anyone needs that crap.
